Ligonier Valley

Coach:Brian Matson

Career record: 13-16

District/Class: 6-AA

2013-14 record: 5-10, 2-2 in Heritage Conference

Returning starters:4

Coach’s outlook:“Coming into the 2014-15 season, we are looking to rebuild with an infusion of youth. We will be a young team, composed primarily of freshmen and sophomores. In terms of expectations, we always expect to be successful. (Assistant coach Tom) Brown and I want to instill in the young guys that are just starting their high school wrestling careers and attitude and expectation of winning. We know that there will inevitably be growing pains throughout the season, but we are not willing to lower our expectations of these young men simply because they are young and lack varsity experience. They will be held to a high standard on the mat, in the classroom and in all aspects of their daily life.

“We do have some holes, presently, in our upper weights, and this may impact our success in dual matches. We are combing the hallways and searching for a few more athletes to fill these spots, but oftentimes it is difficult to convince the bigger guys to take on the grueling challenge of a sport that is as tough as wrestling. My experience is that the bigger guys tend to gravitate to softer sports such as football and would rather loaf around the weight room than bust their butt in the wrestling room. Hopefully, coach and I will be able to find a few young men that like to challenge themselves.

“Individually, we will certainly have some guys that experience varying levels of success. My expectations, looking ahead to the end of the season, is that we will have four or five regional qualifiersand possibly several state qualifiers.

“Beyond that, we will have to see how fast our underclassmen can ascend the varsity wrestling growth curve.”

Coach’s outlook:“(We are) ready to be back. We have a very young group, with only two seniors. What our seniors lack in quantity, they make up in quality. (We) will have to rely on returning limited varsity experience. This is a solid, hard-working, ready-tomix- it-up group. We'll be tested early by North Star and Berlin right off the bat. That will be a good measuring stick to see where we're at and where we need to be.”
