Despite losing in the Big 12 championship game on Sunday, the West Virginia team arrived back home in Morgantown with better news. The Mountaineers, coached by United graduate Randy Mazey, earned one of the top 16 seeds and will host a four-team regional at Monongalia County Ballpark starting on Friday in the NCAA Tournament.
It is just the second time in school history the program will host a regional, the other occasion coming in 1955. Now in his seventh season at West Virginia, this will be Mazey’s second trip to the field of 64 at the helm.
Chestnut Ridge graduate Phillip Dull is a freshman on the 37-20 squad, which lost a 5-2 decision to Oklahoma State in the Big 12 finals.
Ranked No. 17 in the country, West Virginia will learn who else is in its regional during a selection show at noon Monday on ESPNU.
