For the second time in three weeks, the United High School football program will forfeit a scheduled game.
The school made the announcement on its website on Thursday:
“Regrettably, due to unforeseen circumstances, Friday evening’s United Varsity Football Game against Homer-Center has been cancelled.
“Please know that the crowning of the 2019 Homecoming Queen will occur this Friday, September 20, 2019, at the Thomas J. Madill Football Field starting at 7 p.m. The United High School Marching Band will entertain during the crowning festivities and will perform their halftime show following Homecoming ceremony.
“The Homecoming Dance on Saturday, September 21st is still on schedule at 6 p.m in the High School Gymnasium.”
A short roster at the season’s outset was further depleted by injuries early in the schedule, resulting in a Week 3 forfeit to Heritage Conference power Ligonier Valley. That game was supposed to be a special throwback celebration played on a Saturday afternoon at the former Laurel Valley High School Field in New Florence.
The Lions were able to play last week in a loss to Penns Manor, but could not field a full team this week, coach Kevin Marabito said.
“The statement pretty much says it,” Marabito said on Thursday. “Unforeseen circumstances. That sums everything up for the year. We’ve got to do what’s best for the safety of the kids. That’s the No. 1 concern.”
When asked about the remainder of the schedule for now 0-5 United, Marabito said, “It’s pretty much week-to-week.”
United is scheduled to play at Saltsburg on Sept. 27. Homer-Center, now 4-1, will host Northern Cambria on Sept. 27.
