Martella’s opens season with win

After weathering an early storm from Johnstown Collegiate Baseball League newcomer Smith Transport, defending league and AAABA Tournament champion Martella’s Pharmacy managed to hold off Smith Transport in a 10-4 triumph in the league’s 2019 season opener at Sargent’s Stadium at The Point. 

Andrew Pasko (three RBIs) and Phillip Dull (two RBIs) each went 2-for-4 for Martella’s Pharmacy while Omar Ward scored two runs and chased in two more. 

Sullivan Schueltz and John Caldwell each had two hits for Smith Transport, with Schueltz driving in a pair of runs.

Sites announced for PIAA games

Bishop McCort and Conemaugh Township found out their PIAA sites for quarterfinal action on Thursday.

The District 6 Class A champion Crimson Crushers will face District 9 champ Elk County Christian at 4:30 p.m. at Punxsutawney’s Kuntz Field.

The Indians, District 5 Class AA champs, will take on District 12 champion Devon Prep at the Greene Township field in Scotland, just outside of Chambersburg, at 2 p.m.

Quarterfinal winners advance to Monday’s semifinals.

St. Michael tops Somerset

SOMERSET – Nick Peretin and Caleb Sorchilla each had three hits as St. Michael topped host Somerset 9-4 on Tuesday in a Cambria League American Legion contest.

The Saints (2-0) got two hits apiece from winning pitcher Seth Richardson and Zach Myers.

Cole Maranowski had two hits with a double for Somerset, which also got a double and two RBIs from Brody Close.


Bedford defeats Ebensburg

BEDFORD – Drew Hall was 2-for-3 with a double, Karson Reffner drove in two runs and Austin Price scored twice as Bedford defeated visiting Ebensburg 9-3 on Tuesday in Cambria League American Legion action.

Dylan Arnold added a triple, Jared Dowey was 2-for-4 with a double and Calvin Iseminger had a double for Bedford.

Elias Kline was 2-for-3 and Evan Becquet was 2-for-4 with a double for Ebensburg.


Smith Transport edges Ophthalmic

Luke Schrock scattered three hits with eight strikeouts in a complete-game victory as Smith Transport edged Ophthalmic Associates 2-1 on Tuesday in the Johnstown Collegiate second game at Sargent’s Stadium at the Point.

Jason Ozog had two hits with a run batted in and Alec Supanick added a double and scored a run for Smith Transport.

Tyler Bodenschatz was 2-for-2 with a walk while Jake Shope supplied a double and scored Ophthalmic’s run.
