Coach Pat Pecora’s nationally ranked Pitt-Johnstown wrestlers begin their home schedule tonight at 7 p.m. against West Liberty (W.Va.) State College at the UPJ Sports Center.

The Division II No. 3 Mountain Cats enter the home opener with a 2-1 record.

UPJ dropped a 31-10 match to Division I power Penn State on Nov. 13, then bounced back that same day at the Pennsylvania State Duals with consecutive wins over Clarion University 26-12 and Mercyhurst College 30-7.

Sophomores Albert Miles and Mike Corcetti each came out of the duals unscathed at 3-0.

Three Mountain Cats will take the mat tonight as the top-ranked grappler in Division II. Senior national runner-up Ryon Mazzocco (Penn Cambria) at 125 pounds, senior national champion Thad Benton at 141 and All-American Corcetti at 184.

Pecora, in his 30th season guiding the Mountain Cats, has two other wrestlers – 174-pound All-American Eli Garshnick (United) and heavyweight Zach Majocha, a two-time national qualifier – ranked sixth nationally.

Last season UPJ earned a 36-6 road victory against the Hilltoppers.

West Liberty, Pecora’s alma mater, comes into tonight’s match with a 1-0 mark. The Hilltoppers defeated Thiel College 30-6 at home on Wednesday.

The Hilltoppers have two wrestlers ranked eighth in the country, 165-pound national qualifier Chris Gibbs and junior All-American Tommy Clark at 174.

Before tonight’s match, UPJ will honor last season’s All-Americans and National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic team members.

The Mountain Cats’ next home match is Dec. 9 against Kutztown University.
