The Johnstown Tomahawks NAHL Junior A team has a busy summer planned.

The Tomahawks will hold a tryout camp in Minneapolis from July 6 to 9. Another camp will be held in Farmingdale, N.J., from July 13 to 15.

“That will complete our tryout camps, and we will invite players from those camps to our main camp in August,” Tomahawks President Richard Bouchard said.

Bouchard said the team previously held a tryout camp in Pittsburgh several weeks ago. He said 85 players participated in the camp, and 12 of those were invited to training camp.

“That went really well,” Bouchard said. “We found some talent to invite to our main camp along with our draft picks and our tendered players.”

The NAHL draft was held May 31, Bouchard said. The Tomahawks had nine draft picks, he said.

Training camp will open Aug. 9 at Cambria County War Memorial Arena, Bouchard said.

The Tomahawks begin their first season with a pair of road games at Port Huron, Mich., on Sept. 8 and 9.

Johnstown’s first home game will be against Michigan on Sept. 29 at Cambria County War Memorial Arena. The same teams will play again the next day at the arena.

“Season tickets are going quite well. They really took off (last) week,” Bouchard said. “That’s exciting. We’ve sold 100 season tickets in the first two weeks.”

The Tomahawks received positive feedback after hiring popular former Johnstown Chief Jason Spence as head coach. The team later named Mike Letiza as an assistant coach.

Johnstown previously built its front office with two well-known former Chiefs, General Manager Rick Boyd and Director of Business Operations Jean Desrochers.

“It’s been positive around town,” Bouchard said. “There is a lot of excitement. We just want to keep the buzz going.”

Spence and other team officials have participated in the Fourth of July Freedom Celebration Week at The Galleria in Richland Township. Team representatives have been at a Tomahawks booth since Friday and will be there through July 4 to sign autographs and provide information.

The team also unveiled its website, www.johnstowntomahawks.com, and phone number, 536-GOAL.
