The United Lions boys basketball team caught fire in the fourth quarter to outlast Bellwood-Antis 39-37 in a District 6 Class AA game at Hollidaysburg Senior High School.

The Lions fell behind 32-27 after three quarters, but charged from behind to advance to a quarterfinal game against Tyrone on Saturday.

“All year, (our kids) have been able to do that,” United coach Bill Clevenger said. “The entire year, they would get down, and they would come back, even against some stiff competition.”

The game was close early, with the Lions holding a 12-10 lead after a quarter and a 23-21 advantage after the half. The Lions were pounding the ball inside to 6-foot-3 junior Ryan Moreau, who had 10 of his game-high 18 points in the first half.

Then the Blue Devils came out of the locker room in the third quarter with fire in their eyes, putting together an 8-0 run to take a 29-23 lead with 5:10 left in the third quarter.

The Bellwood-Antis spurt was keyed by some outstanding perimeter shooting by Nate Gray and Ben Hatch.

However, the fourth-quarter comeback was keyed by junior guard Bobby Simon, who scored five points in the final eight minutes.

The Blue Devils narrowed the advantage to 38-37 with 1:59 left, but the Lions froze the ball down the stretch to earn their 15th win of the season.

Moreau had 18 points and Simon had 14 to lead United.

Hatch led the Blue Devils with 10 points.
