Sometimes a team needs a game like IUP had on Saturday, a game where most of the regular starters get some rest and younger players get their chance to show their talents.

IUP (7-1 overall, 4-0 PSAC West) took advantage of those opportunities in a 42-6 rout of Mansfield.

IUP did not waste much time, as it scored a defensive touchdown when Mike Reid picked up a loose ball a Mansfield fumble and returned it 40 yards to give IUP a 7-0 lead just five minutes into the contest.

“We had some kids that were deserving of some playing time today that under normal circumstances would not get a chance to play,” IUP coach Lou Tepper said. “This game really helped us rest some key guys who were able to some rest for Thursday.”

One those who did get some rest, but still contributed was senior running back Chris Morgan scored on a 8-yard run at the end of the first quarter to give IUP a 14-0 lead. Morgan finished with 122 yards, gaining just 21 of those yards after the first half. Morgan now needs just 13 yards to surpass Aamir Dew for second place on the career-rushing list.

In the second quarter, Mansfield scored its only points, thanks to an 80-yard run from Rodney Davis. IUP blocked the extra-point attempt.

Morgan put IUP up 21-6 when he scored on a 49-yard run in the second quarter. Kareem Dutrieulle finished the first-half scoring with a 2-yard run to give IUP a commanding 28-6 lead.

Morgan scored again in the third quarter, this time from 7 yards out. Tepper pulled many of IUP’s starters after that as the squad prepares for Thursday night’s nationally televised game with Slippery Rock.

“We needed a game like this,” Tepper said. “We were banged up in at a couple positions. We had planned all week to not use our starters for the entire game, because of the short week we have this week. Hopefully we can get some our guys healthy and ready to go Thursday night.”

IUP defensive back Akwasi Owusu-Ansah put the game away when he recovered a Mansfield fumble and took it 45 yards for a touchdown.
