The Tribune-Democrat is again teaming with numerous community agencies to provide the Santa Fund, a program to brighten the holiday season for those who might be having a difficult time financially.

The aim when we launched the program a year ago was to make sure every child received a gift at Christmas. And in 2007, this generous region provided nearly $20,000 that was used to purchase gifts for about 600 youngsters.

We expect that the need will be even greater in 2008, as many families are faced with high fuel expenses and increased costs for groceries and other necessities.

And that’s where you come in.

You are seeing advertisements in this newspaper almost daily, and they are of two types:

n Seeking nominations for children or families that could use the support.

n Seeking donations to the fund, from which gifts will be purchased.

No donation is too small.

We’ve received checks for as little as $5. Every penny can help us make a difference for local children.

We would welcome contributions from individuals, families, companies, organizations, groups of co-workers – any entity that recognizes the need and wants to help make a difference.

Our many partners include the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, The Family Center and Alternative Community Resource Program, Girl Scouts, Goodwill Industries, AmeriCorps and the United Way of the Laurel Highlands.

This will be a difficult winter for many residents of the Cambria-Somerset region.

Please help us put smiles on the faces of local children.
