President Donald Trump will discuss economic development and job growth on his trip to the ethane cracker plant in Potter Township today.

POTTER TOWNSHIP — President Donald J. Trump will highlight economic development and job growth when he visits Beaver County on Tuesday.

The president will tour the ethane cracker plant under construction in Potter Township. The $6 billion project will employ 6,000 construction workers and employ 600 people on its operations.

When it begins operation in early 2020, the cracker plant is expected to convert ethane natural gas to plastic for a wide range of uses.

Senior administration officials, who asked not to be identified, said Monday during a conference call that the project is being facilitated by its location within the Marcellus and Utica region.

“They’re taking advantage of the natural gas deposits of Marcellus and Utica shale,” one official said.

Economic development officials in Mercer County have been promoting the area as a potential location for businesses that would use the plastics manufactured at the cracker plant. In the conference call Monday, a senior official said Trump would likely comment on how the cracker plant could provide an economic boost to outlying areas that process plastic made at the plant.

Tuesday’s Pennsylvania stop by the president is the 13th since he took office in January 2017.

Trump will arrive this afternoon at Pittsburgh International Airport and tour the plant. The president will then make some remarks and take photographs with first responders before returning to the airport.

The administration officials said representatives of the building trades working on construction of the plant will be present for Trump’s visit. Shell corporate officials, and leadership of the Pennsylvania State House and Senate also will be present on the tour.

While the senior officials did not elaborate on the nature of the president’s remarks during today’s stop at the ethane cracker plant, they hinted that Trump would connect his policies to energy independence and industrial investment.
