PHILADELPHIA – A memorial service is being held for the first female firefighter in Philadelphia to die in the line of duty.
The event at city hall Monday marks the end of the city’s 30-day mourning period after Joyce Craig’s death.
The 36-year-old died fighting a house fire Dec. 9. She became trapped in the basement of a burning home where an elderly woman was later rescued.
The fire department recently sent Craig’s breathing equipment to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health labs in Pittsburgh for testing.
Officials say it’s a standard step in a fire death investigation.
Craig’s memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. in the mayor’s Reception Room.
The mother of two served 11 years with the city fire department and was posthumously promoted to lieutenant.
