Handy men and women in Johnstown’s West Hills area soon will have a new shopping option.

Cambria Hardware and Equipment Co., under new ownership since July 1, announced on Monday it had struck a deal to become a new Ace Hardware Super Store.

The store, located on Goucher Street near Westwood Plaza, will carry more than 42,000 items that typically would be found in a traditional hardware store.

“When the consumers of the West Hills area look at us, we want them to see us as the one-stop shop for all their hardware needs,” said Dave Crichton, Cambria Hardware’s chief operating officer. “That way they won’t have to make that eight-mile trek over to the East Hills.”

Renovation already has begun, and the store will remain open during the work.

When Cambria Hardware holds its grand opening in November, the new 25,000-square-foot store will feature a full line of hardware, Ace’s Color Your Life paint department, outdoor power equipment, a small engine repair facility and a selection of convenience lumber.

“We’re going to immediately create 20 to 25 jobs within our initial plan,” Crichton said.

The store’s new owners are Bob Gardill of Upper Yoder Township and Greg Gardill of Southmont.

The partners are investing more than $2 million into the facility, a statement reported.

“From all of our research, we have real reason to believe this will be very successful,” Crichton said.

“We know that in order for that to happen, we have to make it a first-class establishment, and that does take some money.”
