An unidentified man broke into an automatic teller machine in Somerset on Friday and then fired a gun at witnesses before speeding away in a van, authorities said.

Borough police said they recovered most of the stolen money when they found the stolen van on Missoura Street.

There was no sign of the two occupants.

Surveillance video from a camera at 1st Summit Bank, 404 N. Center Ave., showed a white man wearing dark clothes, a baseball hat and a mask approaching the ATM around 3 a.m., police said.

Sparks were seen flying as the man cut the bolts of the ATM and removed the door, police said. The man climbed back into the van and the vehicle drove off.

Someone inside the van fired a shot at two men who witnessed the incident. One of the witnesses returned fire with his own weapon and hit one of the van’s tires, police said.

No injuries were reported.
