More than 200 medical professionals from 12 states are expected at the Rural Telehealth and Advanced Technologies Conference at St. Francis University on Friday.

Hosted by the school’s Center of Excellence for Remote and Medically Under-Served Areas, the conference focuses on chronic care, traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder and telehealth technology, with emphasis on military personnel.

Local experts and nationally recognized authorities will present seminars on the latest developments.

Researchers from Conemaugh Health System in Johnstown will report on a computerized medical record system being developed and tested in cooperation with Northrop Grumman Corp. Tested locally, the system is envisioned to enable military, Veterans Affairs and civilian health providers to share information while protecting confidentiality.

Richard Mural, Windber Research Institute’s chief scientific officer, will outline progress on studies of the reproductive system and breast care.

Jay Roberts, director of CERMUSA, will present the center’s latest telehealth programs.

George Zitnay of Westmont, co-founder of the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Centers, will discuss military partnerships with local rehabilitation programs. Zitnay moved to the Johnstown area to retire, then opened the newest Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Centers programs here.

Keynote speaker will be Brig. Gen. Loree Sutton, director of the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury in Arlington, Va. She will address issues faced by service personnel and their families after deployment. The center is striving to remove the stigma associated with mental health symptoms that prevents some soldiers from seeking help.

Other speakers include Michael Collins, assistant director of UPMC’s sports medicine concussion program, and Dr. James P. Kelly, director of the National Intrepid Center of Excellence in Rossalyn, Va., and co-author of the sports concussion guidelines of the American Academy of Neurology.
