Another north-central Pennsylvania community is opposing a state Public Utility Commission plan to split the 814 area code into two area codes.
The St. Marys City Council has approved a resolution against the proposal that would change that region’s area code to 582, with 814 left to a swath of west-central Pennsylvania.
The St. Marys Daily Press reported that Mayor Sally Geyer said a new area code would require numerous changes.
State regulators voted last month to reconsider its decision and hold more hearings following petitions from opponents during a public comment period.
Opponents also voiced opposition at a hearing Monday sponsored in part by the DuBois Area Chamber of Commerce. The Courier-Express of DuBois reports most attendees said they preferred overlaying the new area code over the whole region.
