State police have charged a man with using a bed sheet to strangle his cellmate at a western Pennsylvania prison.

Nineteen-year-old William Brown, of Upper Darby, was charged Thursday with criminal homicide and aggravated assault at the State Correctional Institution-Pine Grove on Sunday.

Police say 29-year-old Jayson Stewart, of Arnold, was found dead about 3 a.m. Sunday in his cell at the prison about 45 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Police say Brown cut Stewart’s face with a razor and tried to suffocate him by putting a sock in Stewart’s mouth. When that didn’t work, police say Brown tried to suffocate Stewart with a pillow then finally wrapped a sheet around his neck.

Brown was to be arraigned by video Thursday afternoon. It’s not clear if he has an attorney.
