Gov. Tom Corbett’s budget secretary says he doesn’t see where to find the money to keep subsidizing state-supported universities at current levels.
Charles Zogby told the state Senate Appropriations Committee on Wednesday that it is difficult for him to see how to restore those cuts being proposed by the Republican governor.
Last week, Corbett proposed a cut of $625 million, or 52 percent, for the 14 state-owned universities in the State System of Higher Education, plus Pitt, Temple, Penn State and Lincoln.
In keeping with a pledge not to raise taxes as he faces a multibillion-dollar deficit, Corbett is also proposing to cut $1 billion, or 16 percent, from the state’s support of instruction in public schools.
Later Wednesday, the committee is scheduled to take testimony from university leaders.
