Although Westmont Hilltop School District teachers do not yet have a new contract, school will begin as scheduled Wednesday.

Negotiations are expected to continue, school board President Mitch Azar said today.

“We’re still continuing to talk,” Azar said. “We have another meeting scheduled for next week.”

The district has 109 unionized teachers, and their contract expired on June 30, 2006. School administrators and a union representative have characterized contract talks as amicable.

Health-care coverage apparently is the biggest sticking point.

Both sides earlier this year rejected a fact-finder’s report that proposed a compromise contract deal.

But Azar said that report contains information that could be helpful in future negotiations.

“There were some things in there that were beneficial,” he said.
