This small coal town is answering last year’s call from Thunder in the Valley organizers to regionalize the popular biker event that has downtown Johnstown bursting at the seams.

The first “Pool ’n Pork” festival is being planned at Nanty Glo’s Pool and Park to coincide with the annual motorcycle rally held in downtown Johnstown in late June.

Even with assistance from private contractors hired by the Greater Johnstown-Cambria County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the event strains city resources and occupies much of the downtown area.

After last year’s rally drew an estimated 200,000 people to Greater Johnstown, rally organizers encouraged outside entities and other locales to get involved and further regionalize Thunder in the Valley.

Members of the Nanty Glo recreation commission hope their efforts with help raise money for the park and pool.

Jay Evans, the commission’s vice president, hopes folks will not only feast on a variety of porcine products, but also make use of the park’s swimming pool and campground.

“We’re looking to raise funds,” Evans said. “Our long-range goal is to get at least 20 camp sites with electric hookups here.”

He also is looking for pork-product vendors. “We’re trying to get people to bring some kind of a pork-related products, like pulled pork sandwiches or ribs,” Evans said.

Interested vendors may call 659-2396.
