The Hello Shop, a chain of greeting-card and gift stores based in downtown Johnstown since 1979, is going out of business.

The last day of operation for the stores under the ownership of the Hello Shop will be Sunday.

Some stores, such as the location in The Galleria in Richland Township, will remain open under new ownership, according to Bob Ritter, president of Hello Corp. of Pennsylvania.

The company’s corporate headquarters, at 422 Main St., will continue operating for a short period, but will shut by the end of August, Ritter said. He refused to comment on any other details of the company’s demise.

The Hello Shop’s troubles surfaced in January, when the chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Later that month, the company said it was closing 15 of its 35 locations as part of its reorganization plan.

Among those initial closures were Hello Shops in downtown Johnstown and at Richland Town Centre.

The Hello Shop had stores in Florida, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland and Ohio, but its roots are firmly planted in Johnstown.

The company had as many as four stores in the immediate Johnstown area – Westwood Plaza, Richland Town Centre, downtown Johnstown and The Galleria – as well as locations in Somerset and Ebensburg.

The first store – the former Westmont Card and Supply Store – was established in 1965.
