The Garden Club of Johnstown will celebrate its 75th anniversary this year by hosting monthly meetings on aromatherapy and cooking as well as English gardening and floral design.

The club meets the second Monday of every month at noon. Meetings are held at either the Community Arts Center of Cambria County, 1217 Menoher Blvd., Westmont, or Westmont Presbyterian Church, 601 Luzerne St.

On March 8 at the arts center, Sue Konvolinka will speak on planting the right plant in the right place and will provide information on soil testing.

The club will celebrate its 75th anniversary with a luncheon April 12 at the church.

Eileen Mider, president, said the 75th anniversary will be commemorated with centerpieces focusing on the diamond shape and a demonstration of glass sculptures in garden shapes by club member Lisa Kuchera.

“This has always been the new member tea, and we’ll still recognize and receive new members,” Mider said.

Aromatherapy 101 will be taught by Jeanne M. Brinker, director of the Institute of Integrative Medicine at Windber Medical Center. It will be held May 10 at the church.

Guests and members will learn how to soothe stress and brighten a mood with aromatherapy.

Laurie Noll from Lorelei’s in Somerset will perform a cooking demonstration featuring asparagus June 14 at the arts center.

“Gardening with Jane Austen” will be presented by Carol Chernega on July 12 at the church.

Chernega will discuss her time in Great Britain working for the Jane Austen Society.

She now teaches the art of creating an English garden.

“We will be hosting our sister club from Somerset,” Mider said. “We went to Somerset last year, then we flip and they come here.”

Rene Hrescak will demonstrate how to make soap in a session on Homemade Soaps and Personal-Care Products on Aug. 9 at the arts center.

Club members Becky Ickes, Mary Jo Gardill, Barb Rushin and Carla Straw will teach floral design Sept. 13 at the arts center.

A workshop to prepare for the club’s fundraiser will be held Oct. 11 at the arts center.

The annual fundraiser will be held Nov. 13 at Sunnehanna Country Club, 1000 Sunnehanna Drive, Westmont.

“This year, the theme will be ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ to tie in with the 75th anniversary,” Mider said.

A session on caring for house plants and deciding on the best plant and where to put it will be held Dec. 13 at the church.

“We thought this would be good for December since we can’t get outside,” Mider said.

“We’re going to bring the garden inside.”

As president, Mider enjoys involving members in presenting programs.

“We have some talented members who have some expertise,” Mider said.

Mider’s own area of interest is growing and using herbs in soaps or fragrances.

She said the club has a lot more to offer than gardening.

“We have field trips, plant sales and civic development projects,” Mider said.
