In 2008, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military forces invaded Georgia, formerly part of the Soviet Union from which it declared independence in 1991. He faced little resistance and suffered no real consequences.
When in 2014, Putin invaded and annexed Crimea, Ukraine, he faced little resistance and suffered no real consequences. On Feb. 24, Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
