We live in a world ultimately controlled by God, and while currently under the influence of evil and the power of Satan, the Prince of the Air, both will soon be ending with God’s kingdom and his people surviving on a renewed earth.
While America is not a Christian nation, our republic was created largely by Judeo-Christians. In 1844, Christianity was declared by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to be part of the Common Law of Pennsylvania, and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1892 declared America to be largely a religious people.
Note the following quotes from William Penn and George Washington at America’s outset:
• William Penn - “Those who will not be governed by God will be ruled by tyrants.”
• George Washington – “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports”; and
• “Our nation will be under God’s protection only so long as it acknowledges God for all of its blessings, and honors the nation Israel.”
God commands his followers to not become engaged in the world or its politics, Christians being permanent citizens of God’s kingdom temporarily passing through the world.
• Isaiah 13:7: “I will punish the world for its evil.”
• I John 2:15: “Do not love the world, or anything in it. If anyone loves the world, the Father is not in him.”
However, Scripture also teaches that the world’s governments are established by God, and as temporary subjects we are to submit to that over which they are given authority. Note Jesus’ command: “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s (Matt 22:21). This includes paying taxes, serving as jurors, military service and voting.
The primary purposes of government are five-fold – protection of all life and maintaining peace both without and within; allowing the Gospel to spread; seeking God’s protection and blessings; maintaining infrastructure including police and fire protection, postal service, etc.; and honoring the nation Israel, for which God promises his blessings.
In this connection, in choosing government leaders we are not to be engaged in selecting the best Christian; rather if one has cancer, one seeks the best possible physician.
Thus, primary leaders of government should foremost be persons able and committed to meeting the five primary objectives above.
In a world where evil and evil leaders reign, God uses such leaders to help accomplish his will. Indeed, it is often through evil that God’s will is most dramatically displayed, recall King Nebuchadnezzar, King David and others.
In responding to America’s second Trump(et) call, note that with God in ultimate control during the past four years, America has been at peace in the world, the America/Israeli relationship is at a 75-year high, the American Embassy has been moved to Jerusalem, a peace agreement has been reached between Israel and the United Arab Republic – an essential first step toward a prophesied peace treaty with Palestine – plus a number of steps aimed at honoring our nation’s regard for all life.
Carefully note the Scriptural “Feast of the Trumpets” (a current metaphoric reference not lost on God) with the Torah’s Feast of Trumpets and blowing of the shofar calling the Israelites to repentance, and the New Testament trumpets destined to awaken people to repentance, and God’s approaching judgment.
It is also in this connection that the COVID-19 pandemic has been allowed by God just as he allowed the plagues of Egypt, the Bubonic plague, the 1918 Flu, the 9/11 attack, etc. – all in order to awaken the people.
As in Hemingway’s novel, “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” our primary focus should not be on America’s leader, but rather on God, and the need of each of us for self-examination, repentance and redemption.
In the meantime, parents must realize the importance of teaching their children in their homes, churches and elementary schools, the essentials of world history, the truth of Scripture, and God’s plan for the world.
