Virginia Ave. Fire

Members of Johnstown Fire Deptartment use a  ladder truck to attack hot spots at a structure fire in the 1100 block of Virginia Avenue in the Morrellville section of Johnstown on Monday, Oct. 24, 2016.

Crews remained on the scene Monday morning putting out hot spots after a house fire on the 1100 block of Virginia Avenue in the Morrellville section of Johnstown.

Johnstown Fire Department Assistant Chief Jason Novak said the call came in at 2:15 a.m. for the five-alarm fire.

“Crews were on scene within two minutes,” he said. “The bulk of the fire was to the rear of the structure. Over 50 percent of the building was involved upon arrival.”

Novak said the home was vacant and there was no electrical service in the building.

“The winds last night were pretty severe, and that didn’t help matters,” he said.

Because of the close proximity of the homes, houses on either side of the structure involved sustained heat and water damage.

No injuries were reported, Novak said.

A state police fire marshal has been called in to investigate but could not be reached for comment on Monday.

Assisting were West Hills, Lower Yoder, West Taylor and Middle Taylor fire departments. West End EMS also responded.

Virginia and Delaware avenues were closed for a portion of the morning while crews cleared the scene.
