A Cambria County man who had sex with a 15-year-old girl last year pleaded guilty in Allegheny County last week to charges of statutory sexual assault and corruption of minors, court documents indicate.

John Sylvester Young, 29, whose last listed address was in the 300 block of Hornet Avenue in the Bon Air section of Conemaugh Township, was sentenced by Judge Jill Rangos to spend 11 1/2 to 23 months in prison, to be followed by five years’ probation.

He also must register as a sex offender for life and cannot have contact with the victim, court documents indicate.

On Sept. 25, 2016, Young and the girl were both members of a wedding party in the Pittsburgh area. Young, a longtime friend of the groom, was a groomsman, and the girl was the bridesmaid with whom he was partnered during the ceremony.

During the reception, Young gave the girl several alcoholic drinks, kissed her and touched her, police said.

The members of the wedding party spent the night after the wedding at a hotel in Green Tree, a suburb of Pittsburgh.

At around 4 the next morning, the girl went to Young’s hotel room, where they had sex, police said.

On several occasions throughout the two weeks after the wedding, at Young’s request, the girl sent him nude pictures of herself through the messaging application Snapchat, police said.

When the girl’s relative – the groom at the wedding where the pair met – confronted Young in October, Young admitted that the girl had been in his hotel room after the wedding and that she had sent him nude pictures, the relative later told police.

In November, the girl was diagnosed with the sexually transmitted disease chlamydia.

At the time, she told police that she had not been sexually active with anyone except Young, police said.

Charges were filed against Young in January.
