Rosemary Pawlowski | Sunday on the Square

Rosemary Pawlowski, Vision 2025 Gallery on Gazebo site coordinator and Central Park Square Capture Team director of the gallery, walks along Gazebo Place, which will be closed to traffic and lined with tables for Sunday on the Square on Aug. 4. July 1, 2019.

At this event, you may feel as though you’ve stepped into a painting.

Sunday on the Square, based around Georges-Pierre Seurat’s painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,” will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Aug. 4 in Central Park in downtown Johnstown.

The fundraising event is being presented by Gallery on Gazebo and will feature 11 chefs from the Greater Johnstown area who will prepare two specialty food items each in tents scattered throughout the park.

Gazebo Place will be closed to traffic and lined with tables where attendees will be able to sit, relax and enjoy the chef-prepared creations.

Live musical entertainment will be provided in the park’s gazebo throughout the day.

Rosemary Pawlowski, Vision 2025 Gallery on Gazebo site coordinator and Central Park Square Capture Team director of the gallery, said the event is the organization’s description of a perfect afternoon.

“This is outdoor dining on a pedestrian mall, fine food from regional chefs, entertainment and activities for the whole family, all at an affordable cost,” she said.

“We are simply capitalizing on a natural asset, which is downtown’s Central Park, and we want to celebrate it.”

Participating chefs include those from Lazarus Cafe, The Fat Squirrel, Press Bistro, Balance Restaurant, Marie’s Nutcracker Sweet, Sunnehanna Country Club, Rayne’s Backyard Barbeque, Asiago’s, Stone Bridge Brewing Co., Scott’s By Dam and Faranda’s Farm.

Chefs will be showcasing $4 and $8 dishes.

“The chefs readily accepted and are really excited and happy to be doing this,” Pawlowski said. “We have a nice diverse group.”

The event allows for BYOB in addition to purchasing alcohol from vendors.

“Since this is on the street, people can walk freely and get a feel for downtown,” Pawlowski said.

“Other places in town with be open that day, so people can kind of feel the vibe of downtown, and that’s really important.”

For children, there will be a bounce house and a caricature artist.

Members of Band of Brothers Shakespeare Company will be on hand, strolling around the park dressed in 19th century clothing.

There also will be an eclectic collection of donated art on display around the gazebo.

“We’re going to sell them at really great prices, and we’ll have someone who will explain the different styles of the pieces,” Pawlowski said.

“It’s an opportunity to be a collector and start your art collection.”

Gallery on Gazebo will be open during the event, providing tea samples.

Proceeds from the Sunday on the Square will be used to fund Gallery on Gazebo exhibitions, programs and special events.

Events sponsors are Wessel & Co. and AmeriServ Financial.

Admission is $10 per person.
