‘Perfect’ river level thrills paddlers at Stonycreek Rendezvous

Kayakers, canoeists and rafters from across the region and neighboring states will participate in the Stonycreek Rendezvous Friday through Sunday at GreenhousePark in Tire Hill.

Live music

The Birddoggs will perform during Next-to-Last Friday at the Ethnic Social Club, Heritage Discovery Center, 201 Sixth Ave., Cambria City, Johnstown.

Doors opens at 5 p.m. and the music begins at 5:30.

Guest bartenders will be from Greater Johnstown School District.

There is no cover charge.

Whitewater mecca

Benscreek Canoe Club’s Stonycreek Rendezvous will be held Friday through Sunday along the Stonycreek River, based at Greenhouse Park, Route 403, Tire Hill.

Admission is $10 for weekend pass.

History walk

An 1889 walking downtown tour will be offered at 1 p.m. Thursday beginning at the Johnstown Flood Museum, 304 Washington St., Johnstown.

A lower town walking tour will be offered at 1 p.m. Friday beginning at the Johnstown Flood Museum.

The tours will feature flood-surviving buildings, photographs and stories.

Cost is $5 or $3 with museum admission.

That’s entertainment

The following events will be held at Richland Township Fire Department, 1321 Scalp Ave.:

• Smoke & Spirits event will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday.

There will be samples of moonshine, whiskey, bourbon and craft beer. Musical entertainment will be provided by Jazz Trip.

Advanced tickets are $10 and $15 at the door.

• Station 3 “On Stage” Concert Series will be held from 5 p.m. to midnight Saturday.

Even the Odds will play from 5 to 8:30, followed by Bastard Bearded Irishmen from 9:30 to midnight.

The Fabulous Hubcaps will perform at 6 p.m. Friday in the Windber Area High School auditorium, 2301 Graham Ave.

Portage Area High School will present “Altar Egos, The I Do’s and Don’ts of an American Wedding” at  7 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the auditorium, 85 Mountain Ave., Portage.

Tickets are $3 for adults and $1 for children.

Children’s production

“A Play About a Dragon” will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday at Off Pitt Street Theater Co., 110 W. Pitt St., Bedford.

String performance

Johnstown Symphony Orchestra Community Strings will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, 1006 Chestnut Ave., Northern Cambria.

Proceeds will benefit Coal Country Hangout in Northern Cambria.

Take a hike

The Cambria County commissioners will host the third annual Cambria County Hero Hike from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday on the Ghost Town Trail to honor military men and women.

The 7.5-mile hike begins at 1097 First St. in Nanty Glo and ends at 424 Prave St. in Ebensburg.

Donations will be accepted for Veteran Community Initiatives Inc.

Gallery events

The following will be offered at Gallery on Gazebo in downtown Johnstown:

• Kayla Pongrac will give a presentation about the six classes of tea and how to make the perfect cup from 12:05 to 12:20 p.m. Friday.

• Local artist Dan Helsel will present an old master’s painting demonstration from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday.

• Bridget Mayak, sculptor, potter and arts advocate, will give a gallery tour on the current exhibit “CreativiTEA” from 12:05 to 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

She also will take orders for personalized, handcrafted mugs. Cost is $25.
