KOVALCHIK – Mary, 89, Johnstown, died July 30, 2009, at Good Samaritan Nursing Center. Born Jan. 7, 1920, in Johnstown, daughter of the late Lewis and Anna (Madarasz) Kovalchik. Preceded in death by brother, Charles; infant sister, Pearl; sisters, Eva Miller and Pearl Mastovich; and her longtime companion, Lou. Survived by the following brothers and sisters: Justine Herczegh, Windber; Lewis, and wife, Reba, Harrisville, Pa.; and Julia Novak, and husband, John; Ann Kovalchik; Catherine Kovalchik; and John, all of Conemaugh. Also survived by sister-in-law, Pauline Kovalchik; numerous nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. Lifetime member of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church. Mary always enjoyed life and especially spending time with her dear friends and family. She had worked at TOPS diner. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Henderson-Makuchan Funeral Home, 434 First St., Conemaugh, where Parastas will be sung at 8 p.m. Funeral service will begin at 8:45 a.m. Saturday with a brief service at the funeral home and continue immediately to St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, the Very Rev. Archpriest George Johnson, followed by interment in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church.
