Area campgrounds should have no shortage of customers this week with Thunder in the Valley roaring into Greater Johnstown.

Hotels and motels in the region are booked solid. That leaves camping as an alternative.

“We refer people to the campgrounds,” said Lisa Rager, executive director of Greater Johnstown-Cambria County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The Cambria Summit Chapter of ABATE (Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education) operates a campground at the Cambria County Fairgrounds at Ebensburg. It will be available to bikers through Sunday, said Dave Lydick, chapter president.

Tent camping is available for $5 a day. Other camping arrangements are available for various charges, he said.

There will be food and beverage vendors on site each day and entertainment is schedules, along with a bike blessing by the Christian Motorcycle Association at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The campground is for adults only, Lydick noted.

Duman Lake County Park on Route 271 between Belsano and Nicktown is offering camping for Thunder visitors.

Fred Smith, county operations facilitator, said there are open and wooded campsites. Licensed concessions are available.

Camping is available for bikers at Lorain Borough Park off Greenvalley Street in the borough.

There are temporary showers, and breakfast is available, said Paul Rutledge, chief of the Lorain Volunteer Fire Company, the camp’s operator.

The Jerome Volunteer Fire Company on Route 601 has camping available for cyclists through Sunday, said fire company spokesman Nick Panasci.

Showers are available, he said.

Space for cyclists is available at Windber Recreation Park, said Kevin Charney, recreation director.

He said campers must obtain a permit from his office in the Windber Community Building, 1605 Graham Ave.

Various other sites also are providing camping for Thunder participants.
