Flash stumble in NEC opener, fall at home

With two consecutive road wins and victories in three of the past four games, the St. Francis University men’s basketball team brought high expectations into Thursday’s Northeast Conference opener. But Long Island University departed DeGol Arena with a 73-58 win and, as coach St. Francis coach Don Friday put it, more than a figurative handful of the Red Flash’s candy.

Ayre, Hilltoppers halt Crushers

Point blank, Westmont Hilltop goaltender Adam Ayre was the difference on Thursday night.Ayre turned aside 36 shots, including at least a dozen quality scoring chances, as the Hilltoppers upended rival Bishop McCort 5-2 in a PIHL Class A Section IV tilt at Cambria County War Memorial Arena.“The first two periods we had a lot of chances,” Bishop McCort coach John Bradley said. “The difference in the game, I thought, was their goalie. Their goalie made, not just saves, he made spectacular saves at times. I mean point-blank shots that were really good scoring chances.”

Kanuch, UConn hoping to spoil Pitt’s bowl plans

It’s been a rough year for Brad Kanuch, but the Connecticut wide receiver can ease some of his pain by closing out the regular season with a victory over Pitt on Saturday.Kanuch, a Westmont Hilltop graduate, has seen his personal statistics drop this season, but the number that matters most to him could remain the same. With a victory over the Panthers (8-3, 4-2 Big East) and another in a bowl game, the Huskies (7-4, 3-3) would match their win total of nine from a year ago.“Everything’s going pretty well,” Kanuch said in a telephone interview this week. “It’s exciting that we’re going to go to a bowl for two straight years.”

Sheena Aden had game-highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Taylor Griffith added 21 points to lead Pitt-Johnstown to a 74-58 victory at West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Ohio Valley (W.Va.) on Thursday night.UPJ snapped a three-game losing skid and improved to 2-5 overall and 2-0 in the WVIAC.The Lady Cats jumped out to a 22-6 lead 6:07 into the game, before ending the first half with a 38-31 advantage.
Harrison hoping for leg up in race with Ware

A linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers approached his offensive line this week and asked for help in deciding the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year showdown on Sunday. That linebacker was not James Harrison. “Nope,” said Harrison. “There’s no matchup between me and DeMarcus Ware; just my team against his team. That’s all that really matters.” The Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys are two of the NFL’s elite teams, so it’s no surprise that both teams are led by the league’s top defensive player of the year candidates in Harrison and Ware.

Keserich backstops road win

Ian Keserich hadn’t started a game in nearly a month, so the Johnstown Chiefs goaltender made the most of his opportunity on Wednesday night. Keserich saved 34 shots in his first start since Nov. 8 as first-place Chiefs edged the Reading Royals 2-1 in front of 3,511 fans at the Sovereign Center.“Keserich played solid. He played big,” Chiefs coach Ian Herbers said. “He gave us the opportunity to win. That’s good to get him back in there. We’re not a team with just one goalie or one line. Everybody’s got to contribute for us to be successful.”

Eric Knopsnyder | Lozinak has a tough act to follow

Chuck Greenberg and Todd Parnell have done an excellent job of selling the Altoona Curve over the past seven years. They’ve sold the Double-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates to baseball fans and advertisers with promotional pitches that draw crowds by the thousands. They’ve sold the Curve to players and investors with the jewel that is Blair County Ballpark. But on Monday, Greenberg and Parnell’s sales pitch fell short for the first time.
