Pastor’s mission trip will end on Tuesday

The Rev. David Brady, pastor of Central City Full Gospel Church and New Beginnings Worship Center in Ligonier, and chaplain of SCI Laurel Highlands, Somerset, is on a mission trip in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

He will return to the area on Tuesday.

Cook off today at St. James church

Wings of faith cook off will begin at noon today at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 400 Pine St., Johnstown.

Student musicians in concert at Belmont UM

Belmont United Methodist Church, 107 Coldren St., Richland Township, is sponsoring a concert at 10:45 a.m. and 7 p.m. today.

The concert will feature student musicians from Richland, Westmont Hilltop and Conemaugh Township Area school districts. The church choir will present a cantata “Praise the God of Resurrection.”

There also will be special music and a video of the last days of Jesus’ earthly life and the celebration of his resurrection.

A free-will offering will be accepted.

Church to showcase college’s concert choir

Messiah College choir will present a concert at 7:30 tonight at Graystone Presbyterian Church, 640 Church St., Indiana.

The 46-voice choir conducted by Linda Tedford, director of choral activities, is selected by audition from a student body of 2,800.

The Messiah College Chamber Singers, part of the concert choir, also will perform.

Churches to hold Palm Sunday services

The following will hold Palm Sunday events:

Albright United Methodist Church, 608 Cooper Ave., Johnstown, will present an Easter cantata, “Six United For God Choir,” at 2 p.m.

First Baptist Church, 485 Main St., Vintondale, will hold a worship service at 10:30 a.m.

The Rev. Jim Ellsmore, a missionary with American Mission For Opening Churches, will present his chalk art showing the Resurrection.

First Presbyterian Church of Windber, 1101 Somerset Ave., will present a cantata titled “Worthy Is the Lamb” during the 10:45 a.m. service.

Moxham Church of the Brethren, 536 Grove Ave., Johnstown, will feature the Cathedral Choir and drama team in “Bow the Knee” during the 10:10 a.m. worship.

Moxham United Meth-odist churches will process through the neighborhood in a palm parade.

The congregations will meet at 9:30 a.m. at Park Avenue United Methodist Church, Bond Street and Park Avenue, for refreshments and to receive palm branches.

At 10:15, parishioners will proceed up Bond Street to Grove Avenue and then down Grove Avenue to the Grove Avenue United Methodist Church, where a service will begin at 10:45.

A special 40-voice choir and hand-bell choir will sing an anthem.

Richland Christian Church, 1081 Tener St., will hold a service at 9:30 a.m. with the Chosen People Ministries representative Jeff Kipp.

He will deliver the message “Messiah in the Passover.”

Roxbury St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 160 Derby St., Johnstown, will hold worship services at 8 and 10:30 a.m., with music by the Chancel Choir at the 10:30 service.

Roxbury Church of the Brethren, 112 Sell St., Johnstown, 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Brian N. Simmons, pastor, delivering the message “Here He Comes.”

The Cathedral Choir, directed by Melanie Shiley and accompanied by Sean Gibson, will sing “The Palms.”

A Love Feast and Communion service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Arbutus Blough will serve as the pianist.

Wesley United Methodist Church, Main and Church streets, South Fork, will present “Behold the Lamb” by the church choir during the 10:45 a.m. worship service.

Pilgrim church to honor assistant pastor

Pilgrim Church of God in Christ, 108 Poplar St., Johnstown, will hold an appreciation service to honor assistant pastor Elder Joseph Jones during the 10:45 a.m. Sunday service.

Special guests are the Rev. Brian Smith, Western Pennsylvania Church of God in Christ Youth Ministry president, and his wife, Wendy Smith, of Pittsburgh.

Elder Robert Scholfield will be the host pastor.

Organization to hold peace vigil on Sunday

Citizens for Social Responsibility will hold a peace vigil from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the entrance to Richland Town Centre, Theatre Drive, Richland Township.

Lenten recital continues in Somerset

Donald Wilkins will accompany the chancel choir of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in “The Crucifixion” at 4 p.m. Sunday in the sanctuary, 202 W. Union St., Somerset.

Wilkins is one of America’s most accomplished musicians, as an organist, conductor, choir director and educator.

Bryan Lohr, St. Paul’s organist and director of music, will conduct the 20-voice choir.

Joel E. Hoover, a native of Meyersdale, will be the bass soloist.

Joel Shaffer, who has been affiliated with the music program at St. Paul’s for more than 45 years, is tenor soloist.

The event is free and will be followed by a reception.

First Presbyterian to hold breakfast

A Good Friday breakfast will be held at 7 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church social hall, 309 Lincoln St., Johnstown.

Jeff Philibin, a home mortgage consultant with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, will speak.

Tickets are $5 and can be obtained by calling 536-8141.

Passion play to be staged in Ebensburg

“The Resurrection and the Life,” an Easter passion play, will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday through March 23 at Lakeside Community Church, 1006 Rowena Drive, Ebensburg.

St. Clare to hold Divine Mercy novena

St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, 124 Maple Ave. in the Woodvale section of Johnstown, will hold a novena to the Divine Mercy beginning at 7 p.m. Friday.

The nine days of prayer will focus on the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus.

The first three days include the novena prayers, sung chaplet and reflection.

From March 24-28, the novena prayers will be offered during Mass at 7 p.m.

The novena will conclude at 4 p.m. March 29.

The feast day of the Divine Mercy will be celebrated at 9 and 11 a.m. March 30.

Musical to be staged at Altoona church

“The Road to Emmaus,” a passion musical, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church, 810 Ruskin Drive, Altoona.

There is no charge.

Catholic Charities hosting two programs

Catholic Charities of the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese is sponsoring the following programs:

“Hope and Healing,” an eight-week grief support group, will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays beginning March 25 and continuing through May 13 at St. John Gualbert Activity Center, 110 Adams Ave., Johnstown.

A seven-week series for men and women who are experiencing or have experienced a divorce will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays beginning March 27 and continuing through May 15 at St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church Convent Chapel, 2310 Benedict St., Johnstown.

The program will address various areas of adjustments, including stages of adjustment, dealing with grieving, loneliness and letting go and openness and rebuilding relationships.

A special presentation on annulments by the Rev. John Byrnes will be held on May 15, where a free-will offering is suggested.

Sister Sharon Carpenter, LCSW, and Sister Jan Franklin, MSW, counselors from Catholic Charities, will facilitate the groups.

Reservations can be made for either program by sending a $25 check payable to Catholic Charities, 741 Railroad St., Johnstown, Pa. 15901. Deadline is Thursday.
