Chiefs add scoring threat to their lineup

Ryan Del Monte consistently has scored goals and collected points during the past seven hockey seasons.
Johnstown Chiefs coach Ian Herbers is confident Del Monte will continue that trend during the coming ECHL season. Herbers and the Chiefs announced Del Monte’s signing on Friday.

  • HUGH CONRAD | ‘Corleone moment’ hurting Dan Rooney
Irish-Catholics are often very close families – at least until money or property is involved.
When the dollar amount is three-quarters of a billion dollars ($800 million according to one estimate), the Irish are more like the Corleones than the placid Bradys, Ryans or O’Briens.
Of course, the same could be said of many families, regardless of heritage.

  • Family feud: Fired brother could end up costing Dan Rooney control of Steelers
Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney faces an uphill climb in trying to acquire majority control of one of pro sports’ best-known franchises now that his four brothers have hired an investment firm to field offers for their shares of the club.
In a curious twist, Art Rooney Jr., a Pro Football Hall of Fame nominee for his drafting skills who was fired by Dan Rooney 21 years ago, may decide if the team stays in the Rooney family’s control.

  • NEW – Financier makes bid for Steelers
A deal could be reached within days to sell a majority interest in the Pittsburgh Steelers to the chairman of a Pittsburgh-based investment firm, taking control of the NFL franchise away from the Rooney family.

  • McLouth selected to All-Star squad
Less than a year ago, Nate McLouth was a backup on one of the worst teams in baseball. Now, he’s a reserve player on the National League All-Star squad.

  • CORY ISENBERG | Weather plagues racing
Weather is once again the big newsmaker at area racetracks.
Persistent showers on Sunday and Monday at Bedford Speedway forced the cancellation of the track’s PA Posse Speedweek sprint car show.
Doug Esh won the 410 sprint car opener of Speedweek on Saturday at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown. That race was rain delayed for three hours and 40 minutes.

  • Car and driver keep winning together
Adam Kostelnik and his No. 5 street stock car have been practically inseparable for more than a decade.
Why mess with a winning combination?
Kostelnik has won more street stocks division features than any other driver at Jennerstown Speedway.
The East McKeesport racer also has had success in the weekly modified division at Motordrome, where he runs on Fridays, a night prior to racing at Jennerstown.

  • Unanimous decision keeps Taylor perfect in two fights
Andres Taylor didn’t deliver a knockout, but he did enough to impress the judges and his promoter on Saturday night at Fists of Thunder.
The hometown heavyweight scored a unanimous decision over Kevin Hood in front of an announced crowd of 762 at Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
Taylor (2-0) knocked Hood down in the third round, but couldn’t put him away.

  • Chiefs’ McGeehan resigns post
Kevin McGeehan rolled into Johnstown during the summer of 1999 in a well-traveled, 14-year-old vehicle.
On Wednesday, McGeehan, 31, the vice president of business operatons, confirmed that he will leave the Chiefs to accept a job as a pharmaceutical representative. His departure severs the final front-office link to the teams of the early 2000’s that helped the Chiefs emerge from a four-year, non-playoff funk.

  • Chiefs sign three
At the outset of the Johnstown Chiefs 20th anniversary ECHL season, Joey Olson, Joel Gasper and Domenic Maini weren’t even on the team’s figurative radar.
