Obama coming to Johnstown

BY MIKE FAHER
The Tribune-Democrat

The frenetic race toward the state’s April 22 presidential primary will again sweep into Johnstown on Saturday.

City officials confirmed Wednesday night that Democratic front-runner Barack Obama is expected to speak at Greater Johnstown High School.

Details are scarce, however, and the Obama campaign did not respond to requests for comment.

The event is planned for Saturday morning, but it is unclear what time Obama will arrive.

Obama’s appearance will be the second time this month that the high school has hosted a presidential campaign rally.

Former President Bill Clinton spoke there March 12, drawing more than 1,500 people to a rally for his wife, Democratic candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.

While Obama still leads the national race for the Democratic nomination, polls have indicated that Pennsylvania voters favor Clinton.

The Clinton campaign has been canvassing the state for the past few weeks, and Clinton made stops this week in Fayette and Westmoreland counties.

Bill Clinton is scheduled for several Pennsylvania stops today, including an 8 p.m. appearance in State College.

Obama’s Johnstown visit comes less than two weeks after U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Johnstown, endorsed Clinton.

Also on Saturday, the Clinton campaign plans to open its downtown Johnstown office at 421 Main St., spokeswoman Emily Cain said Wednesday.

Speakers at the 11 a.m. event will include Democratic state Rep. Ed Wojnaroski, Cain added.

The Obama camp already has opened a Johnstown office, less than a block away at 508 Main St.
