Commission moving swiftly toward eradication goal

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is moving swiftly toward its goal of eradicating wild pigs from the state’s woodlands.
Cal DuBrock, director of the Bureau of Wildlife Management, reported to the commissioners last week that the agency has a plan to use volunteer trappers to augment the efforts of the federal Wildlife Services in trapping feral swine.
In response to a ruling by the state Supreme Court that the game commission is responsible for feral swine, the agency started trying to eliminate them. But Wildlife Services, which has conducted wild pig control for years, cautioned against hunting because of fears that it would cause the animals to disperse to new areas.

  • JOE GORDEN | Crossbows gaining acceptance
Those who would like to see crossbows accepted as general archery deer-hunting tackle have done well lately.
As reported last week, state Rep. Gary Haluska, D-Patton, introduced House Bill 2653 on June 18 in an effort to get crossbows approved for hunting across the board. With 55 co-sponsors, including local representatives Bob Bastian, R-Somerset, and Johnstown Democrats Ed Wojnaroski and Tom Yewcic, the bill looks as though it’s got a good shot at passage.

  • Commissioners busy approving agenda
Pennsylvania’s game commissioners gave unanimous approval on Tuesday to adding coyotes to the list of animals those younger than 12 can hunt under the mentored youth program.

  • Changes urged for deer restrictions
Only seven people offered testimony on Monday during the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s public-comment period, and they covered a range of topics from allowing crossbows as regular archery tackle to deer management in special regulation areas.

  • Game commission to hear public comments today in preparation for meetings
The Pennsylvania Game Commission will meet today at agency headquarters to take public comment and hear staff reports in preparation for its formal meeting on Tuesday.
Today’s session begins at 8:30 a.m. with public testimony from speakers limited to five minutes each. When all members of the public have had a chance to address the commissioners, the board will hear reports from staff members.

  • Agency, volunteers gather to tag resident Canada geese
Pennsylvania Game Commission biologists, other agency employees and volunteers formed a caravan that wound its way through Somerset County on Friday as one stage in the agency’s annual project to band Canada geese hatched locally.
“This is part of our annual resident goose banding program Pennsylvania is doing in cooperation with other Atlantic Flyway states,” Game Bird Section Supervisor John Dunn said.

  • JOE GORDEN | Crossbow bill gaining support
Not many hunters took notice when state Rep. Gary Haluska, D-Patton, introduced House Bill 2653, but it’s a piece of legislation that’s sure to get a lot of attention in the coming months.

  • Efforts to lure peregrine falcons finally paying off
It seems there is good news every year about the slow recovery of peregrine falcons in Pennsylvania.
This year, its that a pair of the state-endangered birds have established a nest in Union County, on a cliff overlooking the Susquehanna River. It is the third time in five years that peregrines have nested in what was once their natural habitat in Pennsylvania.
