ANDREWS - Curtis, 83, Johnstown, died Sept. 8, 2007. Member of First Cambria AME Zion Church, where funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, the Rev. Dr. Lamar Lee officiating. Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary Inc., Downtown, 514 Somerset St. Interment, Grandview Cemetery, where military service will be conducted courtesy of Conemaugh Valley Marine Corps Detachment League.



BEATTY - Mary

BEATTY - Mary Louise, 90, Johnstown, formerly of Dale Borough and Richland Towers, died Sept. 11, 2007, after a 10 1/2-year-long courageous battle from a severe stroke. Born March 29, 1917, in Johnstown, daughter of the late Fred and Lula B. (Prough) Blough. Preceded in death by husband, Harry H.; son-in-law, Ernie Haupt; and sisters, Evelyn Rager and Dorothy Burkhart. Survived by these children: Janet Haupt, Ohio; Laura, wife of Wayne Meyer; Harriet, wife of Ronald Steinbring; and Carol Rhoads, all of Johnstown; Bill, and his wife, Pam, Virginia; Helen, wife of Lester Sellers, Johnstown; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Sister of Annabell Hanzek and Betty Seigh, both of Johnstown. Member of Homestead Avenue United Methodist Church. Mrs. Beatty was a wonderful wife, mother and grandparent, and will be sadly missed by her children and all who knew her. Family will receive friends from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at Geisel Funeral Home, Dale, where funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Geisel-Devlin Memorial Chapel. Interment, Grandview Cemetery.

CHOPICK - Mrs. Katherine M., 83, Dunlo, died Sept. 11, 2007, at home. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Jean H. Kinley Funeral Home, Beaverdale. FRESCH - Raymond E. Jr., 71, Baumgardner Road, South Fork, died Se.t. 11, 2007. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home Inc., South Fork, where funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday.



GRIMES - Arthur

GRIMES - Arthur Jr., 65, Johnstown, died Sept. 10, 2007. Born March 9, 1942, son of Arthur Grimes and Janie (Dubose) Winters. Preceded in death by mother and stepfather, James W. Winters. Survived by father; sister, Patricia Walker, Johnstown; brother, James D. Winters, Altoona; aunts, Mary Lee Rose, Ohio, and Belma Dubose, Johnstown; close friend, Jodi Meadows; and nieces, nephews, family and friends. Retired Air Force MSGT with 22 years of service. For the past 17 years, he worked for the Cresson and Somerset prison systems. Arthur was a kind and loving man who enjoyed music, street bikes and sports cars. He will be missed. Family and friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 205 Peelor St., Prospect, where the Rev. Andrew W. Tilly will hold Homegoing Service at 11 a.m. Saturday. KING - Karen E., 62, Johnstown, died Sept. 9, 2007. LEAF - Lt. Col. Oliver

LEAF - Lt. Col. Oliver William, ret., of Friendship Village of South Hills, age 91, died on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007, son of James and Clema Leaf. Beloved husband of 65 years to Verna Douglas Leaf; dear father of Linda Stutzman (Bruce); Deborah Frasher; and Laura Vaughn; grandfather of Eric, Bret (Tina), Jared and Andrew Stutzman; William Frasher; Evan, Colin and Alex Vaughn; and the late Amanda Frasher; and dear brother of Ruth Hayden (Joseph) and the late Helengrace Wilson (Stephen); Louise Cushing (George); Jean Harper (Lester); and Vera Larko (Florian). Mr. Leaf attended West Virginia University, where he played baseball, and graduated from University of Pittsburgh in 1938. Lt. Col. Leaf served in the U.S. Army as Battalion Commander, 485th Chemical Division. He served during World War II and in the Korean War. In 1952, he participated in atomic nuclear test programs in Nevada. He served for 26 years in the Army Reserve. Mr. Leaf was employed by Armour Foods Co. for 40 years, and retired as the Northeast USA region manager. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and an usher. He also was a member of the South Hills Lodge 761, F--AM and Menoher VFW of Johnstown. Also past president of the Rotary Club of Johnstown, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, and a member of the Bethel-St. Clair Rotary. A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, in the St. Clair Room of Friendship Village, 1290 Boyce Road, Upper St. Clair. MELVIN - Janis L., 80, Laurel View Village, died Sept. 12, 2007, at home. Born April 15, 1927, in Johnstown, daughter of Cloyd and Katherine (Potter) Barron. Preceded in death by parents; first husband, Frank J. Sambor; sisters, Evelyn Frailey and Betty McCutheon; and sister-in-law, Hazel Barron. Survived by husband of 39 years, Bernard R. Melvin; these children: Cynthia (Sambor), married to Rodger Kraus, Waldorf, Md., and Frederick Sambor, married to the former Michele Prossen, Columbus, Ohio; and grandchildren, Brittany and Katherine Kraus. Sister of Thomas Barron, Laurel View Village. Member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Guild. She was a graduate of Conemaugh Township High School, Class of 1945, and Hammond Beauty School. She was a Laurel View Village volunteer and member of the Residents Chorus. She also belonged to the Town and Country Bowling League. Family receiving friends from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at George E. Mason Funeral Home Inc., Davidsville, where vigil for the deceased will be held Friday afternoon. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Andrew Catholic Church, the Rev. Angelo Patti officiating. O'CONNOR - Vera P., 81, Arbutus Village, died Aug. 30, 2007, at home. Born May 2, 1926, in Bangor, Ireland, daughter of Albert and Lavina (Bell) Johnson. Preceded in death by parents and son, Frank O'Connor Jr. Survived by daughters, Edna, Frances, Trish, Kathleen, Maureen and Roberta. Funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home Inc., Broad Street. Private inurnment at the convenience of the family.

SEESE -?Edith

SEESE -?Edith Louise, 60, New Florence, left this world and went to join her parents with the Lord on Sept. 11, 2007, at Indiana Regional Medical Center. She was born April 23, 1947, in Johnstown, the daughter of the late Robert W. and Elmira (Horner) Seese, formerly of New Florence. Her father retired from Bethlehem Steel Corp., Johnstown Plant, and her mother was an elementary school teacher in Bolivar. Survived by cousins, Nancy and Patsy, Mint Hill, N.C. She was a special friend and temporary mother to Nancy Saxman, who now resides in South Carolina. Edith graduated from Laurel Valley High School in 1965, and then worked for many years at Monarch Towels in the Morrellville section of Johnstown. She was the proud owner of a menagerie of animals. At one time she owned five dogs, three colorful parrots, four horses and a large assortment of cats. Member of First Church of Christ, Bolivar. At one time she was an active member of OES. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years in New Florence. Friends received from 1 until time of service at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kenneth A. Stuart Funeral Home, New Florence, Elder Jeffrey Blankenbicker officiating. Private interment. Because of her unending love for all animals, in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Action for Animals, P.O. Box 814, Latrobe, Pa. 15650.
