ANDREWS - Curtis

ANDREWS - Curtis, 83, Johnstown, died Sept. 8, 2007, at Laurel Crest Rehabilitation and Special Care Center. Born July 1, 1924, in Johnstown, the son of the late Bishop C. and Nettie Lee (Davis) Andrews. He is also preceded in death by his wife, the former Viona Mae Allen, on Jan. 12, 2007; sons, Curtis Jr. and Daniel Andrews; brothers, James and Robert Andrews, Herbert Hoover and Willie Moses; stepmother, Mrs. Essie (Adams) Andrews; and daughter-in-law, Margaret Ann (Evans) Andrews. Survived by children, Gary Andrews, Detroit, Mich.; Ernest Andrews, and his friend, Tina Gordon, Pittsburgh; Barbara, married to Gregory Hilton, Johnstown; Darlene Winston, and her friend, Carl Stephens, Johnstown; Leonard Andrews, Johnstown; David Andrews, and his friend, Gloria Pierce, Chicago, Ill.; Kathy, married to Donald Sye, Harrisburg; Alcinda Andrews, Johnstown; and Neal Andrews, and his friend, Carmen Corley, Johnstown; daughter-in-law, Sheila (Lewis) Andrews, Florida; 25 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by these brothers and sisters, Bishop C. Andrews Jr.; Inez Jackson; Roscoe Andrews, married to Helen; and Lawrence Andrews, all of Detroit, Mich.; Dorothy Richardson, California; and Mattie Smith and Nathaniel Andrews, both of Johnstown; stepsister, Delores Adams, N.Y.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Curtis was a 1942 graduate of Johnstown High School. A U.S. Army veteran and a retired foreman from Bethlehem Steel Corp., with over 40 years of service. He was a 1937 World Marble champion of Johnstown, an avid golfer, being a member of Pleasant Valley Golf Course. He was also a member of First Cambria AME Zion Church, where he belonged to the Men's Zion Chorus and the Sanctuary Choir and was a trustee and where funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, the Rev. Dr. Lamar Lee officiating. Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary Inc., Downtown, 514 Somerset Street. Interment, Grandview Cemetery.



DURIEZ - William H. Sr.

DURIEZ - William H. Sr., 83, Northern Cambria, died Sept. 10, 2007, at home. Born June 8, 1924, in Patton, son of Raymond Sr. and Wilda "Nettie" (Morgan) Duriez. Preceded in death by parents; daughters, Nancy and Lucille; brother, Raymond "Bud" Duriez Jr.; and sister, Louise Walker. Survived by loving wife of 63 years, Kathleen "Kate" (Daisley) Duriez; children, Kay, wife of Eugene Zanella; William, married to former Lynn Ann Shook; and Donald, married to former Pa-tricia "Pat" Glass, all of Northern Cambria; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Brother of Mildred Woods, Cherry Tree; Howard Duriez, Carrolltown; Lucille Davis, Altoona; and Ronald Duriez, Indiana. Retired coal miner and machine operator with PA Mines Corp. and Barnes -- Tucker Co. Owner of Duriez Coal and Excavating. World War II Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post 508 Barnesboro, VFW Post 7503 Spangler, Polish Legion, Civil Defense Club Special Police, Barnesboro Borough Councilman and mason. Bill was active in the local community and donated time and machinery to help build the Barnesboro Little League ball fields with other town volunteers. FRESCH - Raymond E. Jr.

FRESCH - Raymond E. Jr., 71, Baumgardner Road, South Fork, died Sept. 11, 2007, at Memorial Medical Center. Born Jan. 8, 1936, in Croyle Township, son of Raymond E. Sr. and Mary P. (Chaney) Fresch. Preceded in death by parents and brothers, William and "John." Survived by loving wife of 49 years, Eva "Peggy" (Douglas), South Fork, whom he married July 5, 1958; son, Terry, Summerhill; daughter, Tammy, wife of Douglas Eppley, Sidman; and these grandchildren, Andrew, and wife, Brittany; Jesse; Luke; Austin; Logan; and Elissa. Brother of Robert, and wife, Louise, South Fork; Kitty, and husband, Larry Wyatt, Haymarket, Va.; Mary Joyce Oswalt, Monroeville; Connie Jenkins, Summerhill; and Vickie, and husband, Greg Knavel, Pine Grove. Ray was a 1954 graduate of South Fork Croyle High School. He served with Company A of the 876th Engineer Battalion, Pennsylvania National Guard. He was a charter member and past president of Forest Hills Ambulance Association. Ray was a former member and past president of Home Builders Association of the Alleghenies, member of National Association of Trade and Technical Schools Accreditation Team, served on the Building Maintenance Occupational Advisory Committee at Hiram G. Andrews Center and was an instructor in the adult and post-secondary education programs at Greater Johnstown Area Vocational-Technical School. He was the owner/operator of Ray Fresch Jr. Construction Co. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, South Fork, and its Men's Bible Class and a past Lions Club member. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home Inc., South Fork, where funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, the Rev. Dr. Paul B. Morris. Interment at South Fork Cemetery. GRAHAM - Larrie E., 52, Johnstown, died Sept. 10, 2007, at the University Park VA Hospital. Born May 19, 1955, in Johnstown, son of Larrie E. and Adrienne (Seese) Graham. Preceded in death by sister, Deborah Graham. Survived by parents; wife, Louise (Steele) Graham, Johnstown; and brothers, Arthur Graham, North Carolina, and Brian Graham, Johnstown. A U.S. Navy veteran. Former employee of Bestform Industries Johnstown Distribution Center. Employed by the HGA Lending Library, through the Center for Independent Living. GROVES - Warren Calvin King

GROVES - Warren Calvin King, 87, Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland, Md., formerly of Swanton, Md., and Windber, went to be with our Lord on Monday, Sept. 10, 2007, after an extended illness. Born Aug. 9, 1920, in Deer Park, Md., he was a son of the late Martin Luther and Grace (Glotfelty) Groves. He was also preceded in death by his son, Warren E. Groves; daughter, Grace Louise Stone; by his beloved granddaughter, Heather Wooden; two brothers, Martin L. Groves Jr. and Gerald Groves; and by his sister, Virginia Ricketts. Mr. Groves was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served with honor in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters aboard the USS Blessman. He was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church at Meadow Mt. and was a member of the VFW Post 10077 of Deer Park, Md. He was a dragline operator for 50 years at various strip mines, the last being Cooney Brothers of Cresson. Surviving is his wife of 65 years, Olive (Reckner) Groves, and a daughter, Joyce Baker, both of Swanton, Md.; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers, Herbert H. Groves and Norman Scott Groves, both of Keyser, W.Va.; sister, Louella Garheart, Sykesville, Md.; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Groves, Oakland; son-in-law, Gerald Stone, Windber; sister-in-law, Beulah Groves, Sykesville, Md.; grandson-in-law, Don Wooden, Sykesville; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, 21 N. Second St., Oakland, Md., on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Randy Richardson officiating. GRUSH - Luther L., 84, Windber, passed away Sept. 10, 2007, at Windber Medical Center. Born July 27, 1923, in Windber, son of Lemon and Minnie (Ott) Grush. Preceded in death by parents; wife, Lucille; sister, Ertie Varner; and brothers, Herman and Millard. Survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Former member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Windber. Presently a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Windber. Luther was a farmer for over 30 years. He was employed by Penn Traffic Co. and retired from Greater Johnstown Vo-Tech. KING - Karen E., 62, Johnstown, died Sept. 9, 2007, at Memorial Medical Center. Born Nov. 18, 1944, in Johnstown, daughter of the late Robert E. and Irma M. (Irwin) King. She is survived by brother, Dennis E., and wife, Rose; sister, Linda D., married to Paul Lambert, both of Johnstown; nieces, Deborah, married to James Hornick; Dawn, married to Walt Mitchell; Denise, married to Kenneth Tonkin; and Diedre Lambert; nephew, Paul Lambert Jr.; and great-nieces and nephews, Lori Beth Cook; Nichole, married to Buddy Dowell; Amanda, Samantha, and Nathan Mitchell; Morgan, Justin and Brady Tonkin; and Justin and Jeremy Hornick. Karen was a 1964 JHS graduate and worked as a dietary aide in the deli at Allegheny Lutheran Home, where she loved each and every resident and co-worker in her own special way. She was also employed as a cleaner at Grove Avenue United Methodist Church, of which she was also a member, and formerly employed at Cambria Motors and Bali Bra. She also had a special love for all of her various pets. KLINE - Teresa A.

KLINE - Teresa A., 61, Eckenrode Mill Road, Patton, died Sept. 10, 2007, at home, with complications from Mycosis fungoides T-Cell Lymphoma, which she has been battling for the past 18 years. Born Feb. 16, 1946, in Elder Township, daughter of the late Gilbert and Catherine (Yeager) Angert. Preceded in death by a sister, Ruth M. Farabaugh. Survived by beloved husband of 40 years, Ronald Raymond Kline, since Sept. 16, 1967; children, Lisa M. (Scott) Shaner, Lynette E. (Johnnie) Johnson and Ronald R. (Jill Serafin); and grandchildren, Luke and Jacob Shaner, Nicholle and Michael Johnson and Christian and Elizabeth Kline. Sister of Rita Kirsch, Ohio; Dorothy Abel, Ohio; William, Pennsylvania; Jean Kennealy, Virginia; Father James Angert, TOR, Virginia; Donna Couturiaux, Maryland; Paul, Pennsylvania; Millie Bodenschatz, Pennsylvania; Edward, Virginia; Eileen Deimler, Pennsylvania; David, Pennsylvania; and Shirley Yeager, Pennsylvania; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Also survived by godmother, Ethel Adams. Teresa was a 1960 graduate of St. Bernard Catholic School, Hastings; a 1964 graduate of Bishop Carroll High School, Ebensburg; and a 1967 graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Johnstown. She was employed as a registered nurse for a total of 31 years, working at Johnstown Mercy Hospital; Union Hospital of Cecil County, Elkton, Md.; Miners Hospital, Spangler; and James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center, Altoona, where she retired from. Past member of 1199P AFGE, Local 1862. Member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Carrolltown; Altar Rosary Society; NARFG and AARP. Teresa enjoyed sewing, recycling, traveling and decorating for different holidays, but she especially enjoyed her husband, children, grandchildren, ICU nursing and friends. Gary Easly, longtime family friend, is handling the arrangements. McKENZIE - Edward R.

McKENZIE - Edward R., 93, Davidsville, formerly of Johnstown, died Sept. 10, 2007, at his residence. Born May 15, 1914, in Johnstown, son of Edward F. and Amelia (Bischof) McKenzie. Preceded in death by parents and sisters, Marion Zedlar and Margaret Martin. Survived by wife, Clara K. Barnhart; son, Timothy, married to former Debra Robel, Johnstown; grandchildren, Brian E., married to former Ginger Fulcomer; Kathryn E. married to Matthew Thomas; Meghan Anne McKenzie; and Krista Marie McKenzie, all of Johnstown; sisters, Alma Crouse, Fort Wayne, Ind., and Dolores Golias, Johnstown; brother, Richard, Westland, Mich.; sister-in-law, Helen (Barnhart) Ragley; and special nephew, William Ragley. Member of Visitation of the BVM, where he was head usher; International Association for Firefighters; Pennsylvania Retired Professional Firefighters Association; Johnstown Professional Firefighters Association; and Ancient Order of Hibernians in America. He was assistant fire chief for Johnstown Fire Department for 32 years. After retirement, he was a chief security officer at the former Lee Hospital for 11 years. U.S. Army veteran. Edward was a devoted and loving husband to his wife for 64 years. He was inducted into Bishop McCort Basketball Hall of Fame. He was an avid fisherman, who celebrated trout season opening with grandson, Brian, and the Moyer gang. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Katie and Meghan's soccer seasons. and applauded Krista's musical performance leads in Conemaugh Township's musicals. He loved the annual Labor Day weekend trips to Busch Gardens with grandchildren, Brian, Katie, Meghan and Krista. He spent summers at his treasured cottage at Hartley Dam in Bedford since 1947. Devoted and endlessly generous father and grandfather of his family. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at John Henderson Co. MORGAN - Emma A. (Yahner), 79, Patton, died Sept. 10, 2007, at Miners Hospital, Hastings. Born July 18, 1928, in Patton, daughter of William and Edith (Black) Yahner. She married James G. Morgan on April 15, 1950. Preceded in death by parents; husband, James G. Morgan, who died Dec. 26, 2004; daughter, Edith; and brothers, Modestus, Leonard, Donald and Reuban. Survived by daughter, Sandra Mock, and husband, James, Altoona; and son, Leonard, and wife, Mary Ann Burkhart, Patton; also survived by grandchildren, Jeffrey Morgan, Kimberly Thompson, Debra Morgan, Christopher Mock and Amber Mock. She is also survived by brother, Lester, and sisters, Elaine McCloskey and Marjorie Keith; also numerous nieces and nephews. Emma enjoyed sewing and loved spending time with her grandchildren and her cats, Bambi and Kitty. ROLINCIK - Josephine B., 89, Levittown, formerly of South Fork, died Sept. 9, 2007, at the home of her daughter, Dorothy, after a long battle with lymphoma. Born Nov. 17, 1917, in South Fork, daughter of Frank S. and Mary B. (Yablonsky) Chimelewski. Preceded in death by parents; husband, Paul G. Rolincik Sr., who died April 7, 1988; brothers, Chester, William and Joseph; sisters, Helen Stock and Mary Chimelewski; and son-in-law, John Vancheri Jr. Survived by children, Paul G. Jr., married to Dorothy Gossard, Lexington, Mass.; John P., married to Georgette Yorochko, Pottsville; and Dorothy M. Vancheri, Levittown; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and brother, John, married to Arlene Wirfel, Bakersfield, Calif. Josephine was the owner of the former Blue Mirror Tavern for over 41 years and worked as a nurse's aide at Cresson Sanitorium. She was president for many years of the Altar and Rosary Society, sang in the church choir, was a Eucharistic minister and organized many church functions at the former St. Anthony's Catholic Church, South Fork. She prayed the Rosary weekly at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, South Fork. Josephine was very active in the Democratic party and was a judge of elections in Cambria County; she was awarded a plaque from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for 50 years of continuous voting. She was recording secretary for Jednota Slovak Lodge 124, was a volunteer at Forest Hills Senior Citizens Center, where she helped serve meals weekly, and was caretaker at St. Anthony's Cemetery for many years. SILEVINAC - LaVerna M., 75, Johnstown, died Sept. 9, 2007, at Memorial Medical Center. Born July 13, 1932, in Chicago, Ill., daughter of Francis and Catherine (Burkhard) Penrod. Preceded in death by parents; husband, John J. Silevinac; infant son, Francis A.; and infant sister. Survived by these children: Michael, and fiance, Dana Sabean, Maine; Mary, widow of Robert Hattaway; Pamela, wife of Edward Ocipa; and John "Jay," and fiance, Patti Carbone, all of Johnstown; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A sister of Evelyn Fabina, Johnstown; and Walter Ray Penrod, Alabama. Retired supervisor of the dietary department for the former Lee Hospital. SKILES - Lois E.

SKILES - Lois E., 86, of Richland Township, went to be with the Lord Sept. 10, 2007. Born Jan. 14, 1921, in Johnstown, daughter of Harry L. and Cora (Gittings) Turner. Preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter, Vicki Skiles; two brothers; and four sisters. She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Harry E. Skiles Jr.; children: Allen, married to the former Joyce Evans, Rochester, N.Y.; Paul, married to the former Peggy Horner, Richland; Harry, married to the former Janice Helsel, Fort Mills, S.C.; Susan, wife of Berton Shaffer, Davidsville; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Lois was a faithful member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Richland. STEWART - John Floyd

STEWART - John Floyd, passed into presence of His Lord on Sept. 5, 2007, at his home. He was 82 years old. He was born Aug. 13, 1925, in Indiana, Pa., to Floyd W. and Margaret J. Stewart. He was a graduate of Indiana High School class of 1944 and Indiana State Teachers College class of 1958, with a certification in art education. John taught in various school districts in Westmoreland and Armstrong Counties and in the Shade-Central City Union Schools in art education for several years, retiring in 1983. His hobbies included gardening, carpentry and oil painting. Following retirement, he cared for his sister, Evelyn Stewart, in his home until her death in April of 2000. He was an inclusive member of the Johnstown Alliance Church. A memorial service at the church is planned for John with the date as yet to be determined. He was laid to rest in the Oakland Cemetery in Indiana, Pa. Arrangements being handled by the Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Richland.

VERBANO - Mary (Canny), 81, died Sept. 8, 2007, at Our Ladys Residence, Pleasantville, N.J., formerly of Johnstown. Born Aug. 28, 1926, in Johnstown, daughter of Michael and Stella (Schellhammer) Canny. Preceded in death by parents; husband, Reynold Verbano, who died June 23, 1992; and sister, Corita Huffman. Survived by daughter, Deborah, married to Shawn Piper, Marmora, N.J.; son, Richard, married to Sharon (Datko) Verbano, Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Holly, married to Paul Campano; Ryan, Brandon and Derrick Piper; and Vincent and Anthony Verbano; great-grandson, Nicholas Campano; sister, Dorothy (Canny), married to Charles Ellis; aunt, Anna Mae (Schellhammer) Moehler; and brother-in-law, Charles Huffman, all of Johnstown. Coleman, Johnstown; grandchildren, David, Kayla, Marissa, C.J., Luke and Ethan Williams and Alyssa, Gabriel and Zachary Coleman; sisters, Grace Malfer; Linda, wife of William Thiel; Mary "Corky," wife of Donald Briggs; Lillian, wife of Dave Kmett; and Annie, wife of John Urban, all of East Conemaugh; Christine, wife of Bob Conahan, Conemaugh; and Betty, wife of Dennis Stephens, Nanty Glo; and numerous nieces and nephews. Charles was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Vietnam War. He was employed as a coal miner at various coal mines in the area. Charles was a member St. Stephen's Catholic Church. He enjoyed playing bingo and loved spending time with his entire family. Viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Baker-Harris Funeral Chapel, Conemaugh, where vigil for the deceased will be held. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, the Rev. Father Andrew Stanko. Committal will be held at Benshoff Hill Cemetery.



ZUBAL - Emma J.

ZUBAL - Emma J., 75, Johnstown, died Sept. 10, 2007, at LaurelWood Convalescent Center. Born March 3, 1932, in Johnstown, daughter of George and Emma (Kovachik) Zubal. Preceded in death by parents. Survived by sister, Florence, married to the late Thomas Gojmerac; brothers, Edward and George Zubal, and James, married to Ilona (Stoyka) Zubal, all of Johnstown; niece, Elaine (Gojmerac), married to Thomas Seigh, and their children, Ben, Jacob, Joseph, Aaron and Rebecca; and nephew, Lawrence, married to Sue (Harbaugh) Gojmerac, and their children, Stacey, Kimberly and Michael. Also survived by cousins, Margaret and Geraldine Hiborik; William Kovalchick, and wife; and Robert Watson, and wife. Emma was a graduate of Greater Johnstown High School class of 1950. A member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church. Friends received from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home Inc., Broad Street, where a brief service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, followed by funeral Liturgy at 11 a.m. at the St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Monsignor Raymond Balta. Committal, Grandview Cemetery. Parastas will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
