It you can’t find something to do in Johnstown, you’re just not trying.

10,000 Maniacs, one of the more popular alternative rock bands spanning three decades, performed Friday.

The free concert drew an estimated 4,000 music lovers to hear the band from Jamestown, N.Y., at People’s Natural Gas Park.

Some of the concertgoers said they followed 10,000 Maniacs for years. It was the band’s reputation that drew others.

“I remember they were big in the early ’90s,” said Davina Bixby, of Johnstown. “I remember their name was all over the place.”

Bixby and husband Ryan arrived early for the twin bill that also featured Johnstown’s Smooth Sound.

“We always complain there’s nothing to do in Johnstown,” Davina Bixby said.

“It’s something fun to do. It’s a free concert so we took advantage of it.”

The concert was sponsored by Lift Johnstown, the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies and the Johnstown Area Heritage Association.

“It’s a really exciting event to kick off the season,” said Shelley Johansson, spokesperson for JAHA. “It’s a wonderful band with such broad appeal.”

10,000 Maniacs formed in 1981 and is considered one of the primary architects of the college rock sound.

The group in known for songs like “Because the Night.” They also performed “Music From the Motion Picture,” their first new release in

14 years.

“We’re really thrilled to be able to have them here,” Johansson said.
