An upcoming community event is sure to put attendees in the holiday spirit.

Laurel Arts in Somerset will hold its seventh annual “Rhythms of Christmas” at 1 p.m. Saturday in the auditorium at Somerset Area High School, 645 S. Columbia Ave. It will feature a Christmas pageant of dance, instrumental music and theater.

Cindy Breen, a board member with Laurel Arts and program coordinator, said for this year’s show they recruited nine student choreographers and more than 80 dancers ranging in age from 2 to those in their 60s, most of whom are dance students at Laurel Arts.

The dancers will perform to a variety of traditional and contemporary Christmas tunes.

“The performances will put everyone in the Christmas mood and put a smile on their faces,” she said. “The show has multigenerational dancers and is a good opportunity for our advanced dancers to do choreography.”

Theater routines will highlight scenes from popular Christmas productions.

In addition, members of the Somerset County Band will be on hand playing some holiday favorites.

Breen said the program attracts a good crowd, with many returning year after year.

“It’s just a nice, fun show, and we hope people will come out and have an enjoyable afternoon,” she said.

The event is free and open to the public.

Donations will be accepted to benefit the Dorothy Dressler Scholarship Fund, which is used to make Laurel Arts programs available to families who might otherwise struggle to cover tuition fees for art and theater camps and enrichment and dance classes.

Following the show, a reception will be held in the high school cafeteria.
