American Legion

Claysburg 7, Lilly 6

LILLY – Dan Panfile went 2-for-3 with a double for Claysburg in a win over Lilly in a game completed Wednesday after the contest was suspended earlier this season.

Lilly’s Josh Gallagher went 3-for-4.

Somerset 15, Portage 2

PORTAGE – Joey Foltz doubled, homered and singled, while driving in two runs and Tyler Uphouse doubled, homered and drove in a pair of runs for Somerset in a lopsided win over Portage.

Somerset’s Jordan Kaufman added two hits and three RBIs and Brett Hemminger singled and hit an RBI-double.

Mike Sinosky went 3-for-4 with a double, Andrew Maul had two hits, Steven Lutz doubled and singled and Scott Nolan added a solo homer for Portage.

Ebensburg 3, Nanty Glo 2

NANTY GLO – Rob Maruca hit the game-winning single to score Drew Klezek in the top of the seventh inning for Ebensburg in a close win over Nanty Glo.

Nate McKeel went 2-for-3 for Ebensburg.

Nanty Glo’s Zach Swartz hit a double and drove in a run.

Westmont 8, Patton 6

Zak Boyd went 3-for-4 and Brennan Becker singled and scored three times for host Westmont in a win over Patton.

Glenn Winslow singled and hit a grand slam, John Fees went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Jordan Fees went 2-for-3 for Patton.

Bedford 12, Cernic’s 8

Ethan Boyd had three hits and Mike Garland and Travis Brigges each had two hits for visiting Bedford in a win over Cernic’s at Franklin Field.

Zach Henry hit a three-run home run and a double and Alex Martin homered in the first inning for Cernic’s.

Curve quartet named to All-Star team

ALTOONA – Four Altoona Curve players were announced as Southern Division all-star selections for the Eastern League All-Star Game, which will be played on July 16 in Manchester, N.H. Representing the Curve and the Pittsburgh Pirates’ organization will be pitchers Pat Bresnehan and Yoslan Herrera, and infielders Jason Delaney and Shelby Ford.

Ford and Herrera were voted into the game by Curve fans as part of the league’s on-line all-star voting process. Bresnehan and Delaney were selected through voting which was conducted among league managers and coaches, broadcasters and media representatives.

BASKETBALL

Pitt learns of its foes on Big East schedule

The Pitt men’s basketball team will play an 18-game Big East Conference schedule the league announced on Wednesday. Pitt will face each of the 15 potential league opponents at least one time during the season and play three of those schools (Connecticut, DePaul and West Virginia) two times each.

Pitt will play nine home and nine away games during regular season league competition.

Dates and times will be released on Pitt’s schedule when finalized in early September.

Pitt’s non-conference opponents will be released at a later date.

Pitt returns three of its five starters, each of its top three scorers and seven of its top 10 letterwinners from a team that captured the Big East Tournament championship, finished 27-10 overall and made its seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

FOOTBALL

BTN announces slate of televised games

CHICAGO – The Big Ten Network revealed its early-season and primetime football schedule on Wednesday. The network will televise the season openers for seven Big Ten teams including Penn State, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio State, Purdue and Wisconsin.

“We are tremendously pleased with our early-season and primetime selections,” Big Ten Network President Mark Silverman said. “Last year’s football season featured many great storylines and unexpected surprises. We can’t wait to see what’s in store during year two on the Big Ten Network.”

Penn State’s season opener against Coastal Carolina on Aug. 30 and its Sept. 20 contest against Temple will be carried by the Big Ten Network at noon.

Joe Paterno, whose 372 coaching victories rank fourth all-time, begins his 43rd season as the Nittany Lions’ coach.
