BASEBALL

Shade shuts down Windber

WINDBER – The Panthers scored runs in all five innings on their way to a convincing, 18-2 win over Windber.

Wayne Deneen led the way for Shade with five RBIs and three runs scored on top of a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.

The Ramblers’ Erick Strapple hit a two-run homer in the second.

Chestnut Ridge tops Everett

EVERETT – The Lions outhit Everett 16-10 and had three hits from a trio of batters in a 7-5 victory over the Warriors.

Pitcher Mike Godissart, who also fanned 10 batters and scored twice, Drew Manges and Denny Whitcomb all had three hits for Chestnut Ridge.

Manges, who doubled twice, drove in five runs. Seth Shaffer had two hits and scored three times.

Everett had two hits apiece from Wes Garland and Josh Bollman.

Curve work a split with Aeros

ALTOONA – The Curve split a doubleheader with the Akron Aeros on Thursday afternoon at Blair County Ballpark, dropping the first contest 3-0, but prevailing in the second game, 3-2, behind a strong pitching performance from Yoslan Herrera.

In the second game of the twin bill, Herrera (3-3) tossed six solid innings and allowed just six hits to earn his second consecutive victory.

Altoona used a three-run third inning to take command of Game 2, scoring the trio of runs off Akron hurler J.D. Martin (3-2) with two outs. Melvin Dorta knocked in Brian Finegan for the first run of the game, then Jonel Pacheco quickly followed by hitting a two-run home run, his sixth of the year, which put Altoona up 3-0.

After Akron scored an unearned run in the fifth, Chris Hernandez allowed a solo home run to Armando Camacaro in the top of the seventh inning, but was able to hold the fort to secure his fourth save of the season.

In the first game of the afternoon, Akron used a steller pitching performance from southpaw David Huff to claim victory. Huff (3-3) allowed only three hits over seven shutout innings en route to a 3-0 Aeros win.
