The Tribune-Democrat

BASKETBALL

Skyles signs with college

Forest Hills senior Brittany Skyles has signed a letter-of-intent to play basketball at Potomac State College West Virginia University.

As a senior, Skyles averaged 19.2 points per game as well as 5.5 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 2.2 assists.

She finished with a school-record 1,585 points and was named to the Laurel Highlands All-Conference team for a second consecutive season. She also played in the Tribune-Democrat Senior Hoops Showcase as well as the Altoona Mirror Classic.

Skyles is expected to start for the Lady Cats, who are coached by James Walton and won the WPCC Championship with an undefeated record.

The daughter of Bob and Paulette Skyles of Sidman, she plans to major in elementary education with a minor in special education.

VOLLEYBALL

Schmidt set to play at Juniata

HUNTINGDON – Amanda Schmidt, a standout at North Star High School, has decided to continue her academic and athletic career at Juniata College, where she will compete under coach Larry Bock.

"Amanda is a terrific student and a wonderful athlete,”Bock said. “She comes to us from one of the top volleyball programs in the state at North Star and she should immediately impact our team’s ability to compete for more NCAA championships.”

Schmidt earned all-state honors in 2006 and 2007 and all-conference, all-county and all-district honors in those same years. She was also awarded the prestigious AVCA High School All-America award. She was the lone player from Pennsylvania to receive this award. Also on her resume is a distinguished club career as a member of the Johnstown Fire Volleyball Club.

She is the daughter of David and Priscilla Schmidt and will be pursuing a degree in digital media.

BASEBALL

North Atlantic schedule set

The fourth-ranked Pitt-Johnstown baseball team will highlight Thursday’s action in the North Atlantic Regional Tournament with a 7 p.m. game against No. 3 Concord at Point Stadium.

Game 1 of the tournament features No. 1 West Chester and No. 6 Kutztown at 11 a.m. at Point Stadium. West Virginia State – the tournament’s No. 2 seed – plays No. 5 Shippensburg at 3 p.m. in Game 2.

Curve game postponed

The Altoona Curve’s final game at Reading was postponed by rain on Monday.

The Curve (14-22) finished their rain-shortened road trip with a 2-5 record, dropping three of four games at Akron and two of three against the Reading Phillies.

Altoona will return to Blair County Ballpark tonight to open a brief three-day homestand against the Akron Aeros beginning at 6:35 p.m.

MOTORSPORTS

Gleasons take first, fourth

LONG POND – Chris Gleason Jr. and Kevin Gleason, sons of veteran racer Chris Gleason of Johnstown, finished first and fourth, respectively, in a 21⁄2-hour Spec Miata enduro on the road course at Pocono International Raceway Sunday.

Driving separate Spec Miatas prepared by Jim Locke Motorsports, Chris qualified fifth and Kevin qualified sixth in the 30-car field despite the fact it was their first experience racing at the Mario Andretti-designed track.
