GJHS’ Penna earns recognition
Greater Johnstown Athletic Director Tony Penna Sr. has been recognized as a Certified Athletic Administrator by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA).
The NIAAA stated in a news release that Penna “has demonstrated the highest level of knowledge and expertise in the field of interscholastic athletic administration.”
The voluntary certification process included a thorough evaluation of the candidate’s educational background, experience and professional contributions, as well as a rigorous, comprehensive written examination.
“Tony is one of an elite group of interscholastic athletic administrators nationwide to attain this level of professionalism,” the NIAAA release stated. The NIAAA is a national professional organization consisting of all 50 state athletic administrator associations and more than 7,600 individual members.
BASEBALL
PSAC tabs Freshour
Richland High School graduate Tim Freshour was a first-team All-PSAC West Division selection after leading the division in starts (13), wins (nine), complete games (nine), shutouts (three) and innings pitched (821⁄3). His 2.30 ERA ranked third.
The nine victories rank in the top five on Shippensburg’s all-time, single-season win list.
Shippensburg is ranked fifth in the North Atlantic Region. The top six teams in the final rankings will advance to the regional tournament.
Freshour played for Delweld in the AAABA League and appeared in two AAABA Tournaments.
RUNNING
Sell takes River Bank Run 25k
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Brian Sell, preparing to represent the U.S. in the marathon at the Beijing Olympics, won the 25-kilometer River Bank Run.
Sell, a Northern Bedford graduate, finished in 1 hour, 15 minutes, 8 seconds, nearly a minute ahead of Ethiopia’s Wellay Weldegiyorgis, who finished in 1:16.06.
Sell qualified for the Summer Games at the Olympic trials in November.
