Richland eatery escapes tax sale

EBENSBURG — Sufficient property taxes have been paid on a Richland Township restaurant to remove it from this year’s tax sale, county officials said Friday.

Rick McQuaide was listed in the county’s July 15 legal notice as owing $47,291 on the former Gingerbread Man restaurant in Bel Air Plaza.

Cambria County’s Tax Claim officials said Friday that they have received checks for a total of $13,043, plus a letter from 1st Summit Bank saying that checks were mailed to the tax bureau on June 3, but were lost or misplaced at the courthouse.

The bank stopped payment on those checks and issued new ones, wrote Russell Gillman, bank vice president.

About 1,300 county properties – 100 businesses, houses and trailers more than last year – are headed for the auction block if sufficient taxes are not paid, or payment arrangements made, before the Sept. 8 “upset sale.”

Gauging past patterns, county Tax Claim Bureau chief Sam Runzo said only 250 to 300 properties are likely to end up being auctioned.
