THOMAS – Edgar, 88, Johnstown, died April 23, 2008, at Memorial Medical Center. Born Feb. 13, 1920, in Moundville, Ala., son of Sturlind and Mary E. (Weatherspoon) Thomas. Preceded in death by parents; sister, Sadie Mae Gee; and daughter, Edgar Mae Crum. Survived by wife of over 60 years, Mary Elizabeth (Johnson) Thomas, and their seven children, Edgar Mae “Topsy” Thomas; Barbara Jean Hemphill; Albert Lee Thomas, and wife, Lorene “Net” (Sanders); Edgar Benjamin Thomas, and wife, Mary Louise (Hamptlon); Alvin Paul Thomas, and wife, Almeta Macy (Frazier); Pamela Melissa Joy; and John Louis Thomas, and wife, Tina Marie (Frierson). Also survived by 24 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; nephew, James Gee; nieces, Elizabeth, and husband, Greg Jones and Annie Marie Rich; and many cousins, family and friends. He was a longtime member of First Cambria AME Zion Church of Johnstown. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and member of Daisytown Sportsman’s Club. World War II veteran who served as a staff sergeant. Retired foreman from the Bethlehem Steel Coke Plant. Past president of the Franklin Plant Social Club and a member of the Flood City Elks Club. Edgar was an avid gardener who enjoyed sharing his harvest with his neighbors and friends. Family and friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at First Cambria AME Zion Church, located on the corner of Menoher Boulevard and Haynes Street, and again from 10 a.m. Saturday until time of Homegoing Service at 11 a.m., the Rev. Dr. Lamar Lee officiating. Committal, Benshoff Hill Cemetery. Moskal Funeral Home, West End, is in charge of arrangements.
