Woman graduates cum laude from IUP

April Mae Fallon, daughter of Yvonne Toth of Windber, has graduated cum laude from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she received a bachelor’s degree in art education and a minor in art history.

Fallon is a 2001 graduate of Bedford Area High School and a 2005 magna cum laude graduate of IUP, where she received a bachelor’s degree in studio art.

She completed her pre-student teaching at Lingelbach Elementary and Fels High School of Philadelphia and her student teaching at Greater Johnstown Middle School and East Side Elementary School.

Collegians inducted into Phi Kappa Phi

The following were inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, the honor society at Clarion University:

Elisa Cekada, daughter of Shelly Craft of Mineral Point, is a junior majoring in elementary education/special education. She is a graduate of Central Cambria High School, Ebensburg.

Gina Fazenbaker, daughter of David and Lynn Fazenbaker Jr. of Addison, is a junior majoring in art. She is a graduate of Turkeyfoot Valley High School.

Kathryn Henry, daughter of Vern Henry of Johnstown, is a senior majoring in accounting. She is a graduate of Conemaugh Township Area High School, Davidsville.

Kathryn Dawn Miesko, daughter of Joseph and Peggy Miesko of Johnstown, is a senior majoring in secondary education/English. She is a graduate of Central Cambria High School.

Britney Pniewski, daughter of Robert and Beverly Pniewski of Ligonier, is a junior majoring in finance/accounting.

Johnstown student gets name in yearbook

Kayleigh Gaborek, daughter of Len and Mary Kay Gaborek of Johnstown, has been recognized by the U.S. Achievement Academy as a student of excellence in English.

Her name will appear in the U.S. Achievement Academy’s official yearbook.

She attends Cathedral Catholic Academy.

Windber man has articles published

Jim Lee of Windber has had nonfiction articles published in “Bibliophilos,” a West Virginia-based literary magazine and on the online edition of the May-June issue of American Book Review Magazine.

He had fiction published in issues of Tales of the Talisman, a science-fiction magazine, and in the men’s magazine Hustler Fantasies.

Homeschoolers receive scholarships

Kyra Alexandra Ganzy, daughter of the Very Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Alexander Ganzy of Westmont, has received the Headmaster’s Scholarship at Linden Hall.

She is a member of the Ligonier Fencing Club, the U.S. Fencing Association and a nationally ranked competitor in jujitsu.

Her brother, Ethan Ganzy, has received a scholarship to attend CFS, the School at Church Farm, in the fall.

Kyra and Ethan are homeschooled within the Westmont Hilltop School District.

Strank Post 5107 installs new officers

Sgt. Michael Strank Post 5107, VFW, has installed the following officers:

Charles Cannin, commander; Joseph Ondrejak, senior vice commander; Al Mesaros, junior vice commander; Don Mauk, quartermaster; Mike Ofsanko, adjutant; Zeke Cekeda, chaplain; Tom Turnbull, surgeon; Mike Kuzmiak, service officer; and Robert Chromy, Mike Kuzmiak and Mike Ziner, trustees.

Portage student wins poster contest

Madilyn Serenko, daughter of Christian and Tristese Serenko, has won first place in the 2008 Arbor Day state poster contest.

Serenko is a fifth-grader at Portage Area Elementary School.

Her poster was chosen from the 535 entries that were received statewide.

Collegian graduates summa cum laude

Chelsea Lynne Reighard, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Gregory Reighard of Clemson, S.C., has graduated summa cum laude from Clemson University, where she received a bachelor’s degree in genetics and language and international health.

She received the Matt Locke Award for outstanding leadership and service; the university’s highest student award; and the faculty Scholarship Award for highest scholastic achievement.

Reighard was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and president of the Clemson Habitat for Humanity Chapter.

She will teach biology for the Teacher for America program in New York and attend graduate school.

She is the granddaughter of Sheldon Reighard of South Fork and Rosemarie Bakos of Windber.

Westmont student is state finalist

Madalynn Swaltek, daughter of Frank and Laura Mikesic of Johnstown, has been chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss Pennsylvania pageant to be held Aug. 1-3 in Harrisburg.

The pageant is for girls ages 13-15.

Swaltek is an honor student at Westmont Hilltop Middle School, where she is a member of chorus, orchestra, reading team and junior high cheerleading.

McCort freshman receives scholarship

Jesse A. Cooper, son of Jim and Francine Cooper of Johnstown, has received a Junior Achievement Bishop Donald W. Wuerl Scholarship.

The scholarship can be applied to a Catholic high school of his choice through the Junior Achievement of Western Pennsylvania for his essay written about his experience with the Junior Achievement program.

Cooper also received the Bishop McCort High School Academic Excellence Award and Scholarship; the Knights of Columbus Award for highest class grade-point average in all subjects; President’s Education Award; English, Spelling and Christian Doctrine Outstanding Achievement Awards; and Monsignor Hemler Outstanding Scholastic Athlete Award.

He is a graduate of St. Patrick School and will attend Bishop McCort High School.

Friedens resident receives bachelor’s

Derek L. Hittie, son of Mike and Debbie Hittie of Friedens, has received a bachelor’s degree in computer science, minor in telecommunications and a concentration in math from James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Va.

He also received the information systems security professional certificate.

At the university, Hittie managed the computer labs and participated in the university outreach as a tour leader and first-year orientation guide.

He was chosen as one of the most outgoing students to represent the university as an orientation program assistant.

Hittie is employed by Accenture, Reston, Va.

Collegian completes first-year of studies

Jared Gorsuch, son of Bradley and Alrene Gorsuch of Vinco, has completed is first-year of studies at the Western University College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, Pomona, Calif.

He is currently first in the class of 217 students.

Gorsuch was inducted into the Honor Society and listed on the dean’s list for the fall and spring semesters.

He received the Arthur Madorsky, MD, Memorial Scholarship Award for academic excellence.

Gorsuch is the grandson of Albert and Elayne Markovich of Vinco.

Richland graduate earns doctorate

Megan Lynn Adams of Vienna, Va., formerly of Johnstown, has earned a Doctor of Philosophy in communication and culture with specialization in intercultural communication and rhetorical criticism from Howard University, Washington, D.C.

She is a 1997 graduate of Richland Senior High School.

Fifth-grader is listed in Who’s Who

Rafalene L. Costanza, daughter of Anthony Costanza and Lisa DeRosa-Costanza of Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, has been listed in Who’s Who Registry of Academic Excellence.

Constanza is a fifth-grader at Mechanicsburg School District, where she is a member of orchestra, safety patrol and environmental club.
