Annual concert in Somerset will salute area mothers

BY TED POTTS

What has become a tradition for the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra continues Sunday when it presents its annual Mother’s Day Concert at 2:30 p.m. at Somerset Area High School.

Sunday is Mother’s Day. The orchestra has been presenting a concert each Mother’s Day at the high school since 2001.

The high school is at 645 S. Columbia Ave.

The concert will feature light classical and popular music as well as salutes to the Big Band Era and to those serving in the armed forces, said Maestro Istvan Jaray, the symphony’s music director.

The concerts got their start through the symphony’s Somerset Auxiliary.

“We have an active auxiliary in Somerset, and we ask those members to come to all of our concerts,” Jaray said.

“We felt that we should go to Somerset to perform as well,” he said.

Mother’s Day was selected for the orchestra’s Somerset trip and the concert became an instant success.

Each concert has attracted a packed house, and the atmosphere is that of a big family, Jaray said last week.

“It’s nice to go over there,” he added.

He termed the concert as a “perfect present” for mothers of all ages.

“We will have a delightful afternoon,” Jaray said.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students. Children younger than 6 are free.

The concert also is free to mothers of any age or generation, noted Patricia Hofscher, the symphony’s executive director.

But the mothers still will need a ticket to attend, she emphasized.

Tickets are available at the symphony’s office, 227 Franklin St. in downtown Johnstown or at any Somerset County office of Somerset Trust Co., Hofscher said.

Tickets also will be available at the door Sunday afternoon, she added.
