Show schedule for submissions to annual film festival

The screening schedule for the third annual Johnstown Film and Wine Festival is as follows:

Thursday, films begin at 7 p.m.

“The Mike Miller Story: Roller Dude or Fistful of Nectarines,” directed by Kevin Stock of Ebensburg. A young homeless man finds success and love at a roller disco.

“Para la Comunidad, Desbe la Comunidad,” a film by Mark Kendall, a student at Vanderbilt University. Documentary examines the work of Bolivian-indigenous filmmakers who have used film and video as part of their struggle for representation.

“What Is Life,” a music video by Tom Getty of Johnstown.

“Werehomo,” by Grant Stetz of Johnstown. A modern, tongue-in-cheek interpretation of the werewolf mythology in which humans shape-shift into alternate states or creatures after being biten.

“Zombees,” by Fred Wilder of Fullerton, Calif. Man’s love for science is the honeybees’ doom.

“Like Pink Milk,” by David Over of Kent, Wash. After being attacked on the street, a man finds refuge in a basement but soon discovers an on/off switch that controls his dreams.

“Psychosomatic,” created by director Jeremy Lutter of Vancouver, Canada, as part of the 2008 Cinevic Film Slam competition in which writers, actors and production teams are assigned to each other to complete a short film from screenplay to finish in 72 hours.

“The Next Step Down,” by Dave Stock of Ebensburg. A murderer deals with his thoughts and emotions after the crime.

“Sour Sam,” directed by Lutter. The comedy’s title character is a bitterly depressed ice-cream man who competes with the local TV cable guy for the affections of another.

“Ghost Stories from the Burgh: Episode 2 – Ghost from Byers Hall,” directed by Chris Cameron of Northern Cambria and Bob Bender of Pittsburgh. A documentary examing an accident that led to a suicide.

Friday, films begin at 7:

“When I Close My Eyes,” written and directed by Max Fedore, a student at Richland High School. A girl learns she has terminal cancer and has one month to live. The film is the festival’s Youth Award Winner.

“Never Alone,” a music video by filmmaker Channing Frampton of New Bethlehem, Clarion County, and a student at Pittsburgh’s Robert Morris University. Tells the story of how the gift of music leads a young girl to God.

“Children of Scum: A Retrospective,” by Danny Grossman of South Pasadena, Calif. A retrospective about the ultimate bad movie with the ultimate delusional cast.

“Heaven,” a music video by Getty.

“Speakeasy,” directed by Joey DiFranco of Chicago. A janitor-turned-advertising executive is mistaken for a famous jazz singer and wins the heart of a young jazz singer. Will she still love him when his secret is uncovered?

“Last Skate for Couples,” is a short film inspired by six abductees and their real-life stories. Director D. Alan Beck, a high school English teacher, made the film with his stuudents through a grant from Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts.

“Coney Island Baby,” by Kevin Stock of Ebensburg. A young employee at Johnstown’s Coney Island restaurant discovers that finding love can be challenging especially when looking in all the wrong places.

“Paris on the Stoney Creek,” a loopy comedy by Bill Eggert of Johnstown. A Paris couple takes a trip to Johnstown and are welcomed by a Johnstown retiree who is haunted by a demonic accordionist.

Saturday, films begin at dusk:

“Smile,” a documentary by Kristy Puchko, a Johnstown native now residing in Astoria, N.Y., and featuring music by Johnstown’s Endless Mike & the Beagle Club. Film examines individuals’ attitudes and reactions to given situations.

“No More Sunday,” by Matthew J. Fridg of Pittsburgh. Tells the story of a medical student on his way home when his trip becomes unpleasant and somber when he receives a call with tragic news.

“Red Hot Delivery,” a narrative comedy by Canadian filmmaker Daniel Hogg. A hapless pizza delivery man races to save his job after a pregnant woman hijacks his car.

“Paper Tiger: Dishonor the Dojo,” by filmmakers Luke Harteis, Josh Stock and Kevin Stock, all of Ebensburg. What will a homeless paperboy interested in adventure find in a world that is full of mystery? The festival’s third-place winner.

“68 Degrees & Clear,” by Los Angeles filmmaker Dawn Westlake. An 11-year-old mugger saves the life of a suicidal middle-aged woman in Los Angeles where its always 68 degrees and clear.

“Oscar Wilde Can Keep His Quotes,” by Jason Oppliger of Cincinnati, Ohio, a film student at the University of California at Long Beach. A Cincinnati schoolboy goes on a quest to find the answer to the question of why people wear neckties. The festival’s second-place winner.

“Eugene and the Worm,” a comedy by Josh Hope of Chicago. Two awkward teens battle two street bullies in a game of basketball for cash.

“Destroy Jonah Hill,” by filmmaker Brad Grimm of Moon Township, Allegheny County, and a graduate of Pittsburgh’s Robert Morris University. A new college graduate moves to Hollywood and finds his dreams of great success shattered when he learns his aspirations have already been achieved by an actor. The new graduate’s goal becomes to destroy that actor. The festival’s first-place winner.

“Fantasy Fragrance,” by Lindsay Berkebile of Somerset, a sophomore at Rochester Institute of Technology majoring in live action film production. A 30-second film which is a commercial for an imaginary fragrance.

“My Grandmother and the Boat: Nunna Mia e la Barca,” by Jacob Dodd, a native of Kittanning, Armstrong County, now living in Richmond, Va. Film reveals the daily life of an Italian grandmother who immigrated to the United States in 1956.

“The Sheetz Run,” directed by Adam Buck of Altoona and brother-in-law of Dave Stock. An optimistic homeless man is catapulted into his own living nightmare: A world without Sheetz convenience stores.

“Ground of the Dead,” by Getty. Film tells the story of a group of young people who try to escape their hometown which has been overtaken by the undead.
