This year’s recipients of the Prince Gallitzin Cross Awards have been announced by the Most Rev. Joseph V. Adamec, bishop of the Altoona-Johnstown Catholic Diocese.
Recipients will receive their cross during the 19th annual awards ceremony beginning with a reception at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 on June 7 at the Cosgrave Center, Mount Aloysius College, Cresson.
The Prince Gallitzin Cross Award was created in 1990 to mark the 150th anniversary of the death of prince and priest Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin.
It honors those persons who embody the spirit of the pioneer missionary of the Alleghenies or who have worked to preserve Gallitzin’s memory.
The 2008 award recipients are:
Eileen Bohensky, a member of SS. Casimir & Emerich Roman Catholic Church in Johnstown.
The Rev. Neil Dadey, pastor of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Bellefonte, Centre County, and Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Roman Catholic Church in Penns Valley, and dean of the Northern Deanery.
Cynthia Dirsmith, a member Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church in State College.
Clare Furnary, a member of Our Mother of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church in Westmont and founder of Birthright of Johnstown.
Mary Gebhardt, a member of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church in Duncansville.
Mary Marlett, a member of St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church in Cresson.
William McKinney Sr., a member of St. Columba Roman Catholic Church in Johnstown.
Cynthia McMullen, a member of the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel in Loretto.
Mary Pettenati, a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Coupon.
George Shevenock, a member of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Roman Catholic Church in Altoona.
Monsignor Timothy Swope, rector of the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel, Loretto, and director of the diocese’s office of ongoing clergy formation.
The Rev. Paul Turnbull, pastor of Our Mother of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church in Westmont.
Dinner tickets are $30 a person, and may be obtained by calling 695-5579 no later than Friday.
