The Pitt-Johnstown baseball team had several opportunities to dent highly touted Shippensburg left-hander Matt Wright on Friday night at Point Stadium. But the Mountain Cats left 12 runners on base, with eight of those in scoring position.Wright, a potential top-five round draft pick who throws in the low 90’s, withstood the multiple threats while throwing 128 pitches in seven innings. The Red Raiders won 11-1 during the second day of the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional in Johnstown.

Red Flash men’s basketball fans are hoping for some positive steps in their future, and the fans and the college community met new coach Don Friday, who was introduced as an optimistic person, one who understands the mission of St. Francis and the hopes for success in the future. “We need a coach that engages our entire community. I remember all of those extra things he’s done as a coach and I felt he has the characteristics we are looking for at St. Francis,” Athletic Director Bob Krimmel said about Friday.

UPJ looks stronger in topping Concord

This Pitt-Johnstown baseball team resembled the one with 30-plus wins and a WVIAC North Division title.UPJ bounced back from a disappointing conference tournament performance by opening the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional with a 6-3 victory over Concord (W.Va.) on Thursday. The Mountain Cats (36-17-1) used a three-run ninth inning to defeat the Mountain Lions (35-14) at Point Stadium.“That was a great feeling winning the first one,” UPJ coach Todd Williams said. “I told these guys the last 11 days, if we win one and get on a roll, who knows what can happen?”

Panthers’ AD headlines club's banquet

Perhaps it was appropriate that Steve Pederson addressed a crowd of more than 200 on Thursday night at Sunnehanna Country Club. The Pitt athletic director has enjoyed quite a comeback with the Panthers program over the past six months. He spoke during an event that marked the return of the Johnstown Chapter of the Panther Club Athletics Banquet.“It’s tremendous to have this event back,” Pederson said. “This area is too important for us for it not to be a big factor in everything we do. We have some of the greatest, most loyal people in the program from Johnstown.”

Call this one a do-over, a second chance, or, as Pitt-Johnstown baseball coach Todd Williams sees it, an opportunity. The Mountain Cats (35-17-1) will host a major event at Point Stadium for the second time this month, as the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional comes to Johnstown today through Sunday. Williams is hoping Part II unfolds more favorably than Part I.

HUGH CONRAD | Red Flash deny rumors of a hire

To paraphrase Mark Twain, the rumors that current Penn State assistant men’s coach Kurt Kanaskie has been offered the head men’s basketball coaching position at St. Francis University are premature. In fact, they are nothing but rumors.Multiple news outlets reported Friday and Saturday that Kanaskie had been offered the job. In response, St. Francis Sports Information Director Bob Volkert issued a strong denial of that Saturday night.
