High School Softball

Central Cambria 6, Hollidaysburg 5

EBENSBURG – Samantha Kemock went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple and Kirsten Lorditch hit a two-run, two-out double in the sixth-inning with Central Cambria trailing 5-3 in a nine-inning win over Hollidaysburg.

Lorditch singled in the ninth, advanced on a single by Renee Risaliti, and scored after a rundown following a failed suicide squeeze attempt.

Ligonier Valley 5, Laurel Valley 0

NEW FLORENCE – Christine Henderson struck out 13 batters and Heather Siemenkewicz went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored for Ligonier Valley.

Blacklick Valley 7, Windber 3

WINDBER – Lauren Wiegman pitched a four-hitter, striking out 12 and allowing no earned runs as Blacklick Valley defeated host Windber.

Megan Thomas singled, scored a run and drove in a run. Kayla Behory singled, stole two bases and scored twice.

Erin Valinsky had two hits and drove in two runs for Windber.

Richland 13, Meyersdale 3

Freshman pitcher Rachel Brant earned her first varsity win with seven strikeouts, two walks and six hits for host Richland in a six-inning win over Meyersdale.

Lauren Kuhne went 2-for-4 and scored three times. Lauren Hoover, Gena Tessari and Sara Szelong each had two hits for the Rams.

Elizabeth Caton went 2-for-3 and scored once and Kara Yutzy went 2-for-3 for Meyersdale.

Conemaugh Valley 14, Rockwood 3

Shantelle Brothers went 3-for-4 with two doubles, Leah Borow went 3-for-4, Katelyn Emigh singled and doubled and Quenna Kist went 3-for-4 and doubled for host Conemaugh Valley in a five-inning win over Rockwood.

Molly Bradley singled twice for Rockwood.

High School Baseball

Harmony 10, Blacklick Valley 0

NANTY GLO – Kyle Gallagher and Drew Wright each went 3-for-4 and winning pitcher Sean Fox hit a two-run homer for Harmony in a six-inning win over Blacklick Valley.

Westmont 21, Windber 7

WINDBER – Westmont scored five runs in the first and never looked back in a six-inning rout of Windber.

David McKolosky went 3-for-5 with a double while Max Smeal tripled and Seth Matthews doubled.

Taylor Keiper and Justin Stevanus each hit two-run homers for Windber. Keiper also doubled and singled in a 3-for-3 effort.

North Star 10, Portage 4

PORTAGE – Cory Kaltenbaugh struck out eight while walking just one and scattering seven hits in a complete-game victory over Portage.

Braden Pyle had a two-run double to pace the Cougars’ offense.

Jeff Jones singled, doubled and drove in two runs for Portage, which got two hits from Joe Borlie.

Blairsville 8, Laurel Valley 5

BLAIRSVILLE – Jonathan Santoro went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and John Knepsha went 2-for-4 with a double to lead Blairsville past Laurel Valley.

Patrick Hall and Josh Jones homered for Laurel Valley while Caleb Karasack had two hits for the Rams.

Meyersdale 10, Richland 5

MEYERSDALE – Ben Lohr went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored and Matt Donaldson went 2-for-2 and scored four times for Meyersdale in a win over Richland.

Dan Barefoot was 3-for-3 and scored twice for Richland.

Somerset 9, Bishop McCort 1

SOMERSET – Jordan Kaufman had two hits and Chase Dykstra had two hits and four RBIs for Somerset in a win over Bishop McCort.

United 8, Purchase Line 7

ARMAGH – Jordan Long had three doubles as United edged visiting Purchase Line.

The Lions won with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Derek Papakie singled and moved up on Chad Potts’ sacrifice bunt. Garrett Hamrock hit the right-center field gap to plate the game-winner.

Long had three doubles for the Lions. Hamrock and Chase Wallace each had two hits.

Tuesday

C. Ridge 14, Tussey Mountain 1

SAXTON – Mike Godissart struck out eight in a mercy-rule shortened win over Tussey Mountain.

Luke Wiley and Drew Manges each had three hits for the Lions.

Rockwood 6, Turkeyfoot Valley 4

ROCKWOOD – Vinnie Baker fanned 11 over five innings for the Rockets, who got two hits apiece from Tyler Baker and Mitchell Deskevich.

Donny Gray’s three hits led the Rams, and Weston Nicola struck out 10.

Salisbury-Elk Lick 4, Shanksville 3

SALISBURY – Scott Knopsnyder drove in the game-winning run in the fifth for Salisbury.

Anthony Hillegas pitched five innings of no-hit relief to earn the win.

College Baseball

UPJ fourth in rankings

INDIANAPOLIS – West Virginia State, which won theWVIACtitle in Johnstown onSunday, is the conference’s highest-ranked team in the latest NCAA Division II regional poll.

The Jackets ared second followed by Concord and Pitt-Johnstown. Shepherd is seventh.

The top six teams in Sunday’s final rankings will receive spots in the North Atlantic Regional.

High School Tennis

Westmont advances to states

Westmont Hilltop defeated Richland 4-1 in the District 6 team championships on Wednesday advancing to the PIAA playoffs for the sixth time in eight years.

The Hilltoppers (16-1), who will face the District 3-2 squad on Tuesday in a Sweet 16 outing, swept the singles matches against the Rams (10-7) with Utsav Bhat downing Steven Maceyko (6-2, 6-1), Sean McGhee defeating Brooks Lohr (6-2, 6-3) and Devin Layton swatting Christian Ference (6-1, 6-2).

In doubles, Westmont’s Corbett Drummey and Aaron Miller bested Andrew Ahlers and Ian Lynch (6-3, 6-2). In the other doubles match, Richland’s Travis Horne and Dan Marshall outlasted Eric Lee and Joe Nagy (5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4).

“We have our largest team with 24 boys,” Westmont coach Sue Minchau said. “We have a strong team that has worked together to achieve our goals. We look forward to the state team tournament.”

Bedford sweeps into PIAA tournament

BEDFORD – The Bedford Bisons (16-1) swept Windber 5-0 Wednesday in the District 5 Class AA team championships to advance to the PIAA Tournament to face the District 7 champion on Tuesday.

In the singles action Wednesday, the Bisons’ Steven Dull downed Brandon Shetler (6-2, 6-0), Adam Helsel got by Dom Balash (1-6, 6-2, 6-3) and Ben Heidorn defeated Darren Rowles (6-2, 6-2).

In the doubles matches, Kyle Morris and Kellen Brown dispatched Jesse Jodon and Ryan Romano (6-1, 6-3) while Jeff Patterson and Maulik Patel beat Travis Weaver and Mike Dobson (1-6, 6-3, 6-3).

Windber finished 12-3.
